I picked up some stuff to make a foam roller... but I wasn't sure what diameter pipe to get, so I got 2" and 3". Each one is 24" in length. The yoga mat I got is 10mm thick.

Which pipe should I use and is the yoga mat the right thickness?

Go with the bigger diameter. But it's still going to hurt some

in diamter my pipe is 4.5" wide, and my mat is roughly half a centimetre thick. i didnt buy the mat or the glue as my buddy made it for me, but i know he used a spray on glue adhesive and its sticking quite well. i bought the black pvc or ABS i cant remember type of piping. it was 13$ for 3 feet of it at rona. i cut it down to 2ft though as 3 ft was too wide.

thanks number 8....

i'm gonna try the 3" and hope it's ok. everything i've seen online is like 6" diameter, guess i should have looked it up before i went out and bought the parts. i'll post my results when it's finished, though since i've never used one before i'm not really sure what will indicate it's working effectively or not.

3" is pretty ballsy dude. that will hurt like a mother ****er. i suggest you go out and pick up the 4.5 and work your way up to the 3". putting your whole body weight on 3" diamter plastic is gonna be brutal but if you can handle it then you will recover much more quickly from a leg workout. good luck.

oh, so that's how it works... i didn't know the smaller the diameter, the better it worked. hmm, well i already started to glue it down, so i'm just gonna go ahead and finish it up and test it out. i can deal with the pain if it helps heal my upper quad in my right leg. it's been in pain for weeks, so i really gotta dig in deep to get it healing... since the foam's a bit thicker, maybe it'll help compensate for the smaller diameter a bit?

i think i should still have enough foam left over, so if if it hurts too much i'll go back to the store and grab the 4" or 5" (they didn't have 4.5").

i dont know about working "better" but the smaller the diameter the deeper its gonna go into the fascia, hence more work done to that area. all i know is that when i started using it the pain was unbearable and now i have it lessened to to merely severe when i use it. it does help with recovery of legs after squats and it makes my back feel great after i roll my spine on it.

ok, now you've got me a bit scared... lol! if 4.5" hurt that much, shit..... ok well i guess i'll find out soon if it's too much. in the meantime, im gonna have to look up exercises to do with it.. not really sure how to use the thing yet.

most of the pain in my leg is coming from the upper region (right below the hip bone).. dunno how to hit it properly.

Try crossing your leg, rest your foot on your knee.Support with opposite hand.Roll the upper glute on each side.

thanks cog.

glue's not working... im getting frustrated. i think i might just buy a damn roller and save myself the aggravation. first not getting the right size, then cutting the foam 1/2cm too short, now glue isn't holding. agh.

Just use some tie straps while the glue sets.

For mine I just use the piping - no foam.
