View Full Version : What do you all think of this?

I think it's bullshit. I think I would immediately cancel my gym membership.

BOSTON - In a test of Harvard's famed open-mindedness, the university has banned men from one of its gyms for a few hours a week to accommodate Muslim women who say it offends their sense of modesty to exercise in front of the opposite sex.

The policy is already unpopular with many on campus, including some women who consider it sexist.

"I think that it's incorrect in a college setting to institute a policy in which half of the campus gets wronged or denied a resource that's supposed to be for everyone," said student Lucy Caldwell, who also wrote a column in The Harvard Crimson newspaper critical of the new hours.

Student Ola Aljawhary, who is Muslim and works out elsewhere on campus but is not one of the women who requested the change, rejected that argument.

"The majority should be willing to compromise," she said. "I think that's just basic courtesy. We must show tolerance and respect for all others."

The trial policy went into effect Feb. 4, about a month after a group of six Muslim women, with the support of the Harvard College Women's Center, asked the university for the special hours, spokesman Robert Mitchell said.

"We get special requests from religious groups all the time and we try to honor them whenever possible," he said, noting that the school has designated spaces for Muslim and Hindu students to pray.

No men are allowed in the gym between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Mondays, and between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Even the staff during those times is all women.

The special hours allow the Muslim women, who adhere to traditional dress codes by covering their hair and most of their skin while in public, to dress more appropriately for exercising, said Susan Marine, director of the women's center.

"It's a pretty big breach of their moral and religious code for a man to see them with their hair uncovered and it's just not possible for them to be in a mixed environment," she said.

When student Kareem Shuman showed up to work out at the gym on Monday, he was turned away but didn't mind.

"Knowing it was requested by women of my faith — it's very understandable to me," said Shuman, 21, who figured he'd just come back later for his workout.

Other men find the new hours inconvenient. Nick Wells, a junior who wrote an opinion piece in the Crimson criticizing the policy, suggested setting aside one room for women.

"It's not that I am opposed to the idea of helping people in religious groups or women in general, but I just think Harvard is not being fair to people like me who live (near the gym)," Wells said in an interview.

The policy only applies to one gym, a facility mainly used for intramurals. Because of its location at the edge of campus, it is the university's least used gym, Mitchell said.

The women-only hours are of minimal inconvenience because they are just six out of the 70 hours a week the gym is open, Marine said.

"Harvard has a moral and ethical responsibility to make sure our students can stay healthy," she said.

An Associated Press reporter who went to the gym Monday did not see any Muslim women entering. Efforts to reach some of the women who requested the policy through the Women's Center were unsuccessful.

The policy will be reviewed at the end of the semester, Mitchell said.

Kent Blumenthal, executive director of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, which has 660 member colleges and universities nationwide, said he could not think of any other institution with a similar policy.

"It seems in some ways contrary to the purpose of campus recreational programs, which is all about access," he said.

Harvard's policy is no different from commercial gyms that cater partially or even exclusively to women, said Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations.

"The Muslim bashers portray it as the world coming to end, but if women have a couple hours a week to work out in private, I don't see it as a major issue," he said.

Fuken amen

The Jews here in Outremont made a YMCA frost the windows in their gym because they were worried young teenage boys would see women in workout clothes.

HEAVEN FORBID WOMEN IN LU LU LEMON!

Just more proof why religion is the bane of existence.

I am all for protecting minority rights, but nothing about having equal hiring practices entails us having to close down the gym for them.

Betcha these women are like the rest that wanna got to the gym. Go for about 3 weeks and then by the end of the trial there will be nobody there. Geez all of 6 women on the whole campus. What a crock. Time for people to start telling these people to **** off. If they got a problem with it they can go back to Iran and work out in an all woman gym there. Most these people left their countries cause there shit-holes, how come they're trying to change things here to be more like what they left.

Rant-off.

bullshit...membership gone. WTF, I don't care if it's muslim, indian, russian whatever, it's still bs.

You know what I hate even more, try getting a gym only for serious lifters, powerlifters/ strongmen and bodybuilders, and see what happens. Guaranteed within a week people will be up in arms and you will be a media story for ostricizing parts of the community...but it is ok for girls only gyms...but not guy only? Whatever, that's why I have my home gym to not allow the F&^*$#g punks, aerobic people and the "peacock show" people to train there.

FACK!!!FACK!!!!FACK!!!!

Thats why the school had trouble refusing. It's the schools fault.

These Muslim women are just a pain in the ass for the school and for the other students.

They wonder why there is so much discrimination in hiring employees in canada and the US. All they do is make problems where there are none with their silly beliefs and morals.

If I were in Saudi Arabia and I said that I want to have a boyfriend I would be thrown in prison and possibly beheaded.
If I brought a bottle of booze into the Saudi I would also be in deep shit.

They do not honor human rights in their homes yet they want us to bend over for them?

You live in Quebec right? So you should know all about human rights here and how they violate them in a "civilized country". I bet you are in the minority english that has had their rights violated for the last 30 years LEGALLY!!. I don't want to open a can of worms here, but before you talk about human rights of other nations, you should look at what is going on at home first. Not meaning to point a finger at you for anything. It's just I'm ticked off out how the english culture and language here have been murdered slowly by discrimination and bigotry but no one seems to have the courage to do anything about it. I know most of the members on this board have no clue what's going on here. But anything on the discussion of human rights from a quebecer gets my blood boiling as this province is one of the biggest violators of human rights I know. Luckily murder is against the law here still eh?

If harvard is giving preferences or making decisions that affect students based on their ethnicity, i sure hope they dont recienve any public funding.....

But they do.

While I certainly do not agree with bending over backwards to necessarily accommodate these women, I also think we should reconsider making vast generalizations that may have broad sweeping ramifications. I don't necessarily believe the problem(s) lie with any one particular group, it is the system that is flawed and this belief that multiculturalism works. I've always liked the analogy of a pie being cut up equally and then having select recipients of that pie want their particular pieces to be cut bigger. If they have a bigger cut, then someone else has to go without.

One would also think that on a board where steroid use is commonplace, that there would be a bit of reflection re: other groups point of view. Meaning, how does society view you and your chosen sport in light of drug use and how steroids are inherently evil? Again, not sticking up for these women, or anyone else in particular at the moment, I do feel that anyone should be careful to acknowledge that there are different points of view 'out there' that may not reflect our own but may have (?) some validity. Not saying we have to agree but we should at least try to put some insightful perspective in place, so we can make more informed comments.

The problem is, its easy to tell the white male (minority now) to **** off but if you tell anyone else to **** off your labeled racist right away......

I sometimes wish I was on wellfare so I could go protest........ Too bad I also hate protesters.....

I doubt that would fly at Berkley. There are tons of "liberal" people who believe in human rights and equality for women and not giving privileges to brainwashed people.

all womens gyms are discriminatory as well.

It is the same thing as a all white gym, that's exclusion based in prejudice!

I still believe that if you are a white male you are in disadvantage.

The thing is women can get away with all female gyms because they say the would feel "threatened" or "intimidated" by men.

I honestly think both are stupid, but if the fat women want to go to curves instead of where I train I am all for that!

Curves has been keeping the fat chicks outta my gym. Much more comfortably working out with other fat chicks that can't seem to lose weight either.

Fat middle aged women are the scourge of modern society IMO.
