I barely watch TV. NBA, some reality TV stuff once in a Blue moon news, Turner classic movies and that's pretty much it.

I want to invest the $$ that I spent on cable buying a new TV set, them a macmini link them and get my TV needs off the internet.

Is that doable?

What is the best route to follow?

Thanks for your help

this is what i do. i dont have cable TV at home. just watch everything off the next. i have 2 pcs, one in my office, and one as my etnertainment center, hooked into the tv and surround sound. i also purchased a wireless keyboard with a built in mouse, so its basically a huge remote control. if you dont care about HD quality tv, this is the route to go.

Sure it's doable. Torrents are a great source for most current (popular) TV shows. Though that's a lot of months saving to equal a new TV. I'm assuming you want an LCD, right? Man, so many to choose from... all the new LED ones sure are lookin mighty fine....

Any 22" flat screen will do it, big screens don't work well in my space.

I gave up my satellite hookup. I watched very little TV. I have an extensive DVD collection and download anything else I want to see. The Mini does not have a HDMI output. You may need one of these http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5969&seq=1&format=2 if you are hooking directly to your TV. If you are running through a reciever you will need a http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5311&seq=1&format=2 for video and a http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2604093&CatId=452 for sound. Your receiver will need to be capable of decoding Dolby for you to get surround sound.

22"? That's crazy talk... you want at least a 32". Hell even in a small apartment, anything less than that is basically a computer monitor. I guess it depends on your set up, but if you plan on watching from a couch, no way is a 22" gonna satisfy you. Though, I am a bit biased... I think anything smaller than 50" is too small... but still, my computer monitor is 23".

How does TV quality over the internet compare to conventional cable? You can download a lot of episodes from networks websites, I just wonder if the streaming quality is as good.

really depends on the source. ive seen movies steamed on justin.tv at 720p or close... but usually between vhs and DVD.

megavideo hosted tv shows are usually HD ripped, but show in dvd-ish quality

downloading a torrent of the show would give u the best quality, but i dont bother if i can just stream it.

i got blu ray for when i want eye candy.

+1

Kind of +1

If you already have a PC that you can do your torrent downloading with then yes this will work. My setup is like this:

Basement --> Modem, Wireless N router, DNS-323 NAS (2x 1TB HDD's Raid 1)

Living Room --> Built HTPC Wired to router on a 50" Sammy DLP

Bedroom --> WD HD Live Wired to router on a 32" Sony LCD

Everything controlled by a Harmony RF remote.

I store all my media (movies, music, pictures) on the NAS and can access from my Netbook (wireless), WD Live and HTPC.

It works great! All in all it was pretty cheap i suppose. Not including the cost of the TV's and Remotes, it was about $1000 all in.

I'd go with what everyone has said here.

Hook up your computer via a HD signal to your TV and either stream videos at 720p or Torrent your fav shows at 720p. It's wayyy cheaper in the long run if done correctly

HDTV + PS3 + money spent on cable bill for extra bandwidth so you can download/stream all you want.
