View Full Version : Music at the gym
I just used my ipod at the gym for the first time and, jeez, did it help alot! I had one of my best workouts that I can remember, and I think a big reason was that I was listening to metallica as opposed to the Miley Cyrus and other garbage my YMCA is constantly playing.
Anybody else notice anything like that before?

I listen to my Ipod but I dont let it influence my workout that much. I love rocking some pantera while i lift for sure.

Hell ya!! My gym plays a lame local radio station, news, road report and the ever annoying D-Jays bantering on how good they are.... I-Pod all the way!!

My workouts go by so much better with my ipod.
Yeah I know. It's so much easier to get psyched up for a set, and I think alot of it is mental so it really helps alot.
I personally dont like things constricting me, i find the wire running down to ur pocket or belt clip or wherever its clipped is annoying. I can zone in pretty good, right before a set, someone could be screaming right beside me and i wouldnt notice. I also mentally yell at myself, which works pretty well, but you get looks when you start talking to urself lol.

my ipod is great on the dreadmill but it's distracting when i'm doing squats or deads.

tread or bike... otherwise i can't figure ot where to put it. I "flooded" an ipod once by sticking it in my sports bra while working out... it got wet and fizzled out on me...
Leigh likes sticking her ipod in her sweatpant pocket, and then forgetting it's in there and doing laundry!...
all in all... better to listen to whatever's on at the gym... the good part... Elite plays All metal, All the time!

I get easily distracted (and annoyed), and the music they played in the gym always pissed me off, but not in a good way, like Hatebreed or Gojira does.... If I go to the gym, I MUST use an iPod, I can't workout without it. I find it really helps motivate and rev me up for heavy sets.. otherwise, I kinda just lose motivation and get sleepy, distracted, bored, etc.

One thing ALL gyms have in common: music sucks!

there is this toque that Nike makes that holds your ipod and headphones so there is no wire to worry about. my friend has one she uses when she goes running. I think it would be cool for workingout too.

Agreed! They always have crap dance-techno music playing at the gym I go to. It`s just disturbing...
IPOD all the way...

I've gotta have my iPod.
I have a program which sorts all my itunes library by bpm which I then cross reference to mph for doing the treadmill or bike, I find it makes those long cardio sessions way easier.
For anything else I have a gym playlist made up consisting mostly of Protest the Hero, Clutch, S.O.A.D and Slipknot, really seems to help keep me in the zone, especially on deads and squats.
Noise cancelling headphones FTW.

DID YOU SAY CLUTCH!!!!
I am the BIGGEST little clutch fan ever... the only vacation I've ever taken Leigh on which wasn';t for Bodybuilding was to follow CLUTCH around Canada...
buddy, I can talk CLUTCH with you for like 5 hours and just be getting started!!
might even do CLUTCH for my next fitness routine...
So you're saying that you kinda like clutch?

50,000 Unstoppable Watts is rocking my socks off lately at the gym, I've got a couple custom Clutch playlists, or I just rock Blast Tyrant front to back.
I can't wait until they come back to Alberta, I saw the Calgary and Edmonton show one night after the other and the sets were both different, they never disappoint.

I never attempt a serious lift without music. The mental rush when I've got the intro to an Eminem/Dope/Saliva/Powerman5000/Disturbed/Rammstein/etc/etc song is unmatchable.

Before I was training with the music that was playing on the radio or if I was lucky...A CD with Rock music was on the Discset!..Now. I have my ipod and I listen to mudvayne, rammstein, disturbed, metallica and I have just One things to say:
MY FOCUS is incredible and this kind of music make me fool like I train..I want to push myself a lot...I'm very concentrated and nobody came to talk to me or disturbed me when I train with my Ipod!^^...I like that!:)
This is a must for me...a Very good must!...
techno, dance or other things like that didn't motive me to push harder in the gym...

music at my gym is actaully pretty good but i still like the ipod. It took a while to get used to the wires but i keep it cranked to the max and i cant hear anything so i dont have to hear others conversations or the noises around. I find it helps me focus. It also doubles as a anti-conversation piece. No body will talk to you and ask you silly questions if you have the ipod in. Earphones in you mean business and if someone you dont care for talks you just go about your business and pretend you cant hear them.

Silence works just fine for my concentration. God help anyone at a commercial gym who puts on (c)rap music at any volume. Not much of a fan of yodeling either.
