So I had a small mishap driving my car yesterday. I was backing out of my parking stall and bumped into a guy who was driving in the alley. I bumped into his right side view mirror with the left edge of my car (i.e. I was on an angle, halfway in the alley) and knocked it out of its socket. I'd say it's mostly my fault, but realistically he had a better view of me than I had of him.

I've never been in an accident so had no idea what should be done (neither did the other guy) but we exchanged info.

I have no collision so from what I gather my insurance will not pay him anything; he will have to go through me. In anycase, i have a few questions:

1) will my insurance go up even though I don't have collision?
2) will his insurance go up?
3) how much is it gonna cost to fix his stupid mirror and what's the best way to go about it?

4)should I have notified my insurance anyway?

I seriously know nothing about insurance even though I've been driving forever. I've been super careful (thus no collision coverage) but i have a ton of shit on my mind right now and it totally distracted me. FML

thanks bros

it might be cheapest for you if you just pay to get his mirror fixed... call 2 places.. get him to call 2 places, take the medium cost, add 50 bucks and offer him that.

That's some of my friends were suggesting. Problem is I never took his number and I never gave him mine.

I have been under a lot of stress lately and I've never been in this situation so I obviously wasn't thinking clearly.

I'm in Alberta. I'm just curious what will happen now given everything and what I should do in the future (knock on wood lol).

If you don't have collision they will not pay to repair YOUR car. So don't even tell them
2) will his insurance go up?
It shouldn't
3) how much is it gonna cost to fix his stupid mirror and what's the best way to go about it?
If it's just a mirrior pay out of pocket it won't be to expensive. Call some wrecking yards.
4)should I have notified my insurance anyway?
NO!

yup.. in Alberta, it's best to try to pay out of pocket. (I lived in Cowtown for my whole apprenticeship 4 yrs)... plus if you're youngish and a guy in alberta, you're getting soaked anough with insurance!

try to find the guy... look up his name in phone book... try to settle without insurance... the good thing (I hope it still works this way out there... I haven't lived in Ab in over 10 years), even if you called your insurance company and made a claim, you should have an option to pay it out of your own pocket with no penalty.

I was rear ended in my truck and a bumper was 500 bucks, I contacted insurance company they told me to submit bills and the when I did, the other party (guy who hit me) jsut paid it out. Good thing was... 3 weeks later, some dumbass slid into my truck and I hadn't fixed the bumper yet... he was all freaked out that he did the damage and gave ,e 200 CASH to NOT call insurance!! KA -Ching!!

If you don't have collision that means your insurance company will not cover damages to your car in a your fault collision. The liability portion (which is mandatory) will cover damages of whoever you hit. If you file a claim your insurance will most likely go up. If your insurance comes up for renewal and they see an accident on your record it will most likely go up.

What province are you in? In Ontario all vehicle accidents must be reported to an accident reporting center.

If all you did was knock a mirror out you're best not to report the accident (if the other driver agrees not to) and repair his damages out of pocket. That way your record stays clean and your insurance company will never know about it. The deductible you'd have to pay would probably be higher than what it costs to fix anyway. Insurance is a big scam and nothing else

There was no damage to my car so nothing needs to be fixed. So basically, my insurance will pay to fix his window (minus the deductible, even if I don't have collision coverage) and my insurance will go up likely?

But I strongly encourage you not to get the insurance company involved. You are better off taking care of this yourself. My dad owns a car dealership and I've worked in that industry for eight years. I am familiar with car repairs and body shops. Without knowing the extent of the damage I would encourage you to get quotes from 3 different shops (just to make sure you're not being ripped off) and pay for the repairs to his car out of pocket. Whenever you can get away with not involving insurance companies you are lucky.

you should have to option to file the claim or pay out of pocket... it's most likely cheaper out of pocket
