Ibuprofen(AND Tylenol) blunts muscle growth - study

Any speculation on wether this effect happens while on cycle also? Discuss.

It also prevents tendons from healing properly or as quickly. It lessens inflamation but causes another problem.
Just use ice. Ibuprofen is not good in the long run.

Good read. Thanks for the link and pdf. I think this should go into the articles section.

I agree. I know of a few guys I played floor hockey with, and they all took Ibuprofen before and after the game, claiming it helped them to "recover faster".
I use Ibuprofen occasionally, but now I'll be sure to avoid it around workout time.

There are a lot of guys and top level pros that take copius amounts of NSAIDs regularly and they are a hell of a lot bigger than most of us but then their gear use and diets are up there as well. All I've heard is it's the price to pay to get through the pain and push forward. Long term I think we can look at guys like Tom Prince who's kidneys blew out because of this, mind you he was on a lot of other pain killers as well.

It is interesting that they chose to not study whether it in fact affected muscular hypertrophy, body composition, strength, endurance. I've taken ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen off and on for many years, and failed to notice any change in body composition or strength.
Is there any chance that while this phenomena is measurable by sensitive, accurate scientific analysys, its effect is so minimal as to be of no significance to athletes or bodybuilders?

I know that when I take Ibuprofen following intense lifting, the muscle groups I work stop being sore a good 1-2 days sooner than when I don't use it. I feel that the natural inflammatory response/sorness is a key trigger to hypertrophy and a sign of recovery in progress; as the body signals you to minimize using the muscle that hurts. I feel that shortening this time span is costing gains.

I'd like to see a study that compares two previously untrained groups, placebo and nsaids and looks at whether there are significant differences in the way they progress.
That's an interesting added point you add td111 about how it may affect behavior.

True.
The oxytocin release brought on by ejaculation creates a meditative effect in certain individuals.

I take Advil, how does that affect muscles? I can't stand aspirin, gives me ulcers in my stomach.

I've seen many studies supporting this. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflamatory and pain reliever, a good substitute for this is White Willow Bark. Should be available at your local health store.

Yes over a 24 hour period. But long term use is much different, in fact newer studies show it HELPS build muscle. MD had an article about it a while back, I will try and find it. It might be similar to this one.
http://leisureguy.wordpress.com/2008/04/09/ibuprofen-builds-muscle/
Most important part of the study:
An earlier study from the laboratory, measuring muscle metabolism (or more precisely, muscle protein synthesis, the mechanism through which new protein is added to muscle), had looked at changes over a 24 hour period. This “acute” study found that both ibuprofen and acetaminophen had a negative impact, by blocking a specific enzyme cyclooxygenase, commonly referred to as COX.
But that study looked at only one day. Over three months, says Dr. Trappe, the chronic consumption of ibuprofen or acetaminophen during resistance training appears to have induced intramuscular changes that enhance the metabolic response to resistance exercise, allowing the body to add substantially more new protein to muscle.
