Toyota Canada says it may announce a recall today of about 200,000 vehicles to fix problems involving accelerator pedals that become stuck in floor mats.

A Toyota spokesperson said this morning the company could release more information later today after the company's parent announced a massive recall of 3.8 million vehicles in the U.S. to replace pedals.

In the U.S., Toyota and the federal Transportation Department said dealers will shorten the length of the gas pedals starting in January while the company develops replacements for their vehicles.

The company and federal agency added that new pedals will be available beginning in April, and some vehicles will have brake override systems installed as a precaution.

Toyota announced a massive recall campaign in late September and told owners in letters to remove the driver's side floor mats to prevent the gas pedal from potentially becoming jammed.

In Canada, Toyota informed vehicle owners via a news release, an "alert" on the company's website and advised dealers to tell customers about the issue but it did not send letters. Under Canadian law, Toyota has 60 days to formally notify customers and the company has said it would comply.

Vehicles affected by the U.S. recall include the 2007-2010 Camry, 2005-10 Toyota Avalon, 2004-09 Prius, 2005-10 Toyota Tacoma, 2007-10 Toyota Tundra, 2007-10 Lexus ES350 and 2006-10 Lexus IS250/350. The Camry is the best selling car in the U.S. while the Prius is the most popular hybrid model.

Toyota announced a recall on Tuesday of 110,000 Tundra trucks from the 2000-03 model years to address excessive rust on the vehicle's frame. The company has not announced any similar action here.

The U.S. recall comes after a high-speed crash involving a 2009 Lexus ES350 that killed four family members near San Diego this summer. The vehicle hit speeds exceeding 190 kilometres per hour, struck another auto, flew off an embankment and rolled several times before bursting into flames.

A family member made a frantic 911 call moments before the crash, telling emergency responders the accelerator was stuck and the driver couldn't stop the auto.

The call ended as someone urged other occupants to hold on and pray. A woman's scream followed.

In Japan, Toyota President Akio Toyoda called the fatal crash "extremely regrettable" and offered his "deepest condolences" to the California family.

Investigators with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration concluded that a rubber all-weather floor mat found in the wreckage was slightly longer than the mat that belonged in the vehicle, and could have snared or covered the accelerator pedal.

The government has attributed at least five deaths and two injuries to mat-related "unintended acceleration" in the Toyota vehicles. It has received reports of more than 100 incidents in which the accelerator may have become stuck in the U.S.

one has to think here...
if your accelerator is stuck, turn off the ****ing engine off...and hit the emergency brake. If things are gonna get bad real fast, slam it into park gear after turning it off. tranny will grenade but atleast it'll slow u dont real fast.

I call bullshit. Your sentence sounds just like his. Lack of capitals to begin a sentence and the letter "I" spelled as "i"... Please keep your posts short if you don`t plan on leaving 2 spaces after each sentence.

The fact you say "he don`t understand" to say that you do understand is the icing on the cake.
