Hey everyone, I've been trying to go to my local gym for a couple of months now, but it seems the times I can go are the only time everyone else can go too.Anyway I was looking for advise as to what to buy for a home gym(Key Components).I was thinking bench and a barbell ,dumb bell set.But how much weight should I buy as a starting point?Any one have any ideas on those adjustable weight dumb bells?I thought they would be a bit of a space saver.Any suggestions on what else I may need to start out?I'm not looking for a complete home gym set up just for the basics.Do you think I could actually make some serious gains out of a basic set up like this?Lastley are there any good sites for basic weight training excersises out there that could be done at home? Thanks very much everyone.

I got bowflex 1090 selectechs a few months ago
10lbs-90lbs in 5lb increments
my only critisizim is they are very long so doing things like hammer curls is out (weight hits shoulder b4 ur even at 90 degrees)
other then that they are a quality product

I work out entirely at a home gym. I have a Powertec cage and bench. This allows for safe squats and bench. You need a fairly high ceiling, but you can then do chins as well.

Go with a powercage and bench. If it has a universal bar then buy universal weights. start with two of every weight. 2.5 up to 45 then buy as many 45's as you need. Thats all you need to start. From there you can built your dumbell set......

1) Power rack and Olympic weights
2) spin lock dbs can go up in increments of 5lbs all the way up to 80lbs .
That's all you'll ever need .

Take it from me you'll have to dump some serious cash if you want it to work. You can start with olympic plates, powercage (W/lat attachment) and swist-lock db's, but slowly you'll realize that you need more stuff.
I'm about 12k into my gym and growing. I financed most of it from Fitness source so it was easier to pay. It's money well spent when there is no commute to the gym, and I don't have to wait for machines.
Here are pic's of my gym now:

LOL. It's my garage. I have to fix it this year, and hang a suspended ceiling with pot lights.

Thanks bro, but it's really low on my priorities for now. I just got done renovating the whole house, and have to re-tile the kitchen this week. The gym will have to wait.

You need as much weight for a barbell as you can lift for your max. Usually you can buy a set with a bar and a pair of 2.5's,5's, 10,25, 35, 45's. Then when you get stronger, buy another pair of 45's and so on.
I have the twist on dumbells and I load them with 10's that you buy cheap at Walmart. They can only take 80's, so I cut down a barbell and use spring collars and I can load heavier for one arm rows or db presses where I need more than the threaded db's can hold.
Hard to do decent calf workout at home though. I stand on the edge of a box with one foot and hold a dumbell in one hand. Kinda lame, and hard on the feet.

I put 3 plates on my bar on my shoulders as if I'm doing squats, and raise my calfs on a 2x4
