I need a medical checkup for my drivers liscence every 5 years. (I am a bus driver, it's the rule... no health issues)... anyway, I am on an INSANE buling program right now, and weighed in 10 pounds MORE than my last city medical (which was 5 yrs ago) so I'm all happy because the scale says 128 pounds!
until my Doctor starts a lecture on the risk of gaining 10 pounds every 5 years and how I should think about watching my diet and excercising more :S
I told him "No, this was on purpose, I'm bulking up right now"
"for what" he asks
"I got into competitive fitness about a year ago and need to add some mass to my physique" I reply.
to which, a lecture on the unhealthiness of Bodybuilding and crash dietting ensues... uuurrggghhhhh
so, has anyone elses Doctor or a practicing medical professional been "down" on your lifting and what you do to your body?
(the funniest part, at my height and 118 pounds my BMI and all standard medical texts put me as "underweight"... at 128, I am at a "healthy" weight, even though those things aren't geared for people to train hard!)

a lot of GPs have no idea wtf they are talking about. They tend to only deal with weight gain related to obesity.
Many have no formal nutritional training. I'm told that the only nutrition classes in med school are electives...

He probably just finished watching a Dr OZ episode talking about crash diets... he wanted to try some new content out on you.

My GP is great for most things but every time I see him he tells me how big I am getting. (He is chinese about 140lbs) All he wants me to do is cardio and lose weight. He keeps telling me that the bigger you are leads to a shorter life expectancy. So the fact that I exercise 5-6 days a week, eat healthy means nothing. Apparently, musclemass = early death. I couldn't imagine what he would say if I was a big guy, I am only 225.

I appreciate the feedback!.. i guess its one of those cases to just smile and nod and forget about it as soon as I walk out the door! lol... Nxt time I'll go in when Im cutting! he'll most likely lecture me on being under weight then!

from a STRICTLY medical point of view, in general, you can see where hes coming from... if hes unaware that you have researched and are educated on what you are doing, and he considers just the "average" person, a large fluctuation in weight and "bodybuilding/crash dieting" is not exactly healthy for MOST people
When you visit a doctor they dont generally have time to get to know you and everything about your lifestyle habits. Thus they consider what the GENERAL trend is.... which is people who try to alter their weights haphazardly, with little education on correct training and following fad diets... and therefore they try to talk people out of it
My GP is GREAT (lol), I should probably give her more credit. She knows about my body building and AAS use (never formally written down), and she follows me along the way. As long as my blood work checks out she has no problem with me supplementing or training. She does scold the AAS use but wants to see me to make sure Im doing ok and keeps me updated frequently.
Shes kinda hot too....lol
Her daughter goes to my school

My doctor is good about my bodybuilding. I go in each year for a physical. He does blood work too. In my off season I am heavier but doesn't lecture me. As long as the blood work comes back ok. My cholesterol is up a bit but not serious or out of the norm. High cholesterol runs in my family.
When I'm dieting and getting ready for a show everything checks out good. I've had blood work done both off season and pre-contest. When I am pre-contest he doesn't bother to do blood work on me because we know it'll be good.
