I've been editing my log post during the day and updating my first post with results.

I just noticed that I can now only edit my last post. Did something change this afternoon?

The spammers realized it was unlimited time for editing so they come in, make some strange posts that kind of re-iterate what others say and later on, they come back and edit their posts to put backlinks to their sites. Annoying as heck.

Melanie Tan is an example of one of the spammers. Watch his posts. Kinda useless and making it similar to what others have said. It's really a spammer for Melanotan USA. (melanie tan). I haven't banned him yet as I want him to waste his time posting before realizing it's all pointless.

Seems the software doesn't have a timeout for usergroups but just overall which forces me to do it this way until I find a solution. The best solution would be to stop users from posting links until 50 posts but the software doesn't come with this feature unless I install an addon. I have seen too many sites get hacked because of addons that had security flaws so I am against those.

If it's really important, pm me.

I'm going to send a message to the software guys asking them if they can somehow make it possible to set the timeout for usergroups and not the whole board.

F'ing spammers reallly make it tough. It's far easier for them to shit on things than it is for MP to keep the board clean of them.

A reactive response that might work would be to run a sql query against recently edited posts that have url's. That would weed out the posts that offend google.

The spammers can be very aggressive.

What does 50 posts have to do with the matter? Seems a little reactionary to me. Give me a moment and I'll address your concerns.

The software has an automatic promotion to a new usergroup depending on number of posts and time here. Most spammers would not spend the time to make 50 posts to post a link. Right now, I managed to stop the signature linking with the 50 posts thing. A normal just registered user can't use signatures. Once a user hits 50 posts, they can.

Still the spammers are creative though. They make a legit post then create a solid line as the signature does and finally they post a link in there. It's always a cat and mouse game. But if I could just stop new registrations from posting any links, it would solve it all. And the editing of posts can be back.

Ah, never knew they come back and edit it. I thought it was just to get post count up for sites that have a limit before allowing links.

Had a new one today, spambot signs up as LadyAdmin, and sends mass virus via PM.

I know some sites that are getting pm spam from users that don't exist. Not on CBB yet but a few others sites. I'm researching it to see how it's being done but can't find out yet. Usually it's by an sql injection but supposedly the most recent version of the software should have plugged any holes for that. Sent in a ticket to vbulletin but they are off during the weekend. Mass virus in a pm sucks. Make sure you don't have any html allowed on your forum. I was doing research on that and my oh my what damage can be done with an XSS attack.

I know, I' dont' think I've ever allowed html. I'll have to double check. I'm going to install this:
http://www.stopforumspam.com/
It's for VB too.

I've blocked full networks coming out of Asia/china. It stopped most of the automated stuff. That's where most of the bots come from. Since this site is mostly for Canadians, it kinda worked well for the automated spam bots. My biggest problem is from physical users sitting behind a computer doing it. A few bots still get through but they aren't much of a headache.

Spammers deserve the torture devices I've posted.
