keep his litter clean (like eod max) and make sure if it is one of those enclosed litter boxes that it isnt too small. If he cant get enough height to drop a deuce he will do it on your floor.

This ^^^ clean it up every night and if necessary once in the morning and once at night. After I started looking after my roommates cat, it no longer shits anywhere but its box.

Think about it, would you want to shit in a box thats already full of shit?

agreed, this is a cat, would you let your roomate stay if he shit on your floor? I have never understood how people enjoy these messy stinky balls of fur.

Is he bulking? That maybe the problem.

Is he sick or upset. Cat's are fussy and pooping outside of the litter is a sign of something wrong. Cat poop generally doesn't smell that bad.

Truthfully, the tone of your post is a little scary. Are you abusing your cat? Is he sick?

A trip to the vet may be in order.

What I do is shit in the litter box first, show him how cool and hip it is to shit into the dirt! Works everytime..... make sure you bury it too....

Might also be these things.....

The cat is suffering from a medical problem involving the urinary tract or a bout of geriatric constipation.
The owner changed the brand or type of litter.
The owner changed the location of the litter box, or replaced the old one with a new litter box.
The caretaker does not keep the litter box as clean as the cat wants it to be, or the owner uses too harsh a cleaning product.
The location of the litter box is too busy or not private enough for the cat.
The home is too large for just one litter box.
The cat cannot access the litter box (the door to the room where the litter box is was inadvertently closed).
The cat is prevented from using the litter box by another animal in the house.
The cat experienced some sort of trauma while in the litter box and now associates elimination in the box with that trauma.
There are too many cats and not enough territory or litter boxes.
Stray cats can be seen/smelled near the cat's territory.
The unaltered male cat has come of age and is marking his territory.
The unspayed female is in heat and advertising for suitors.
Over time, the cat has developed an aversion to the texture of the litter.
The cat was not properly trained to use the litter box in the first place.
The cat is stressed by a change in routine or environment, such as a new baby, new furniture, work schedule changes, vacations, overnight guests, or a move.

^^^^ Yep

My cat shits in the woodpile ( inside ) if his catbox is too dirty.
Which is my fault, not the cats.

Cats are clean animals, a lot cleaner than dogs. If he's shitting on the floor, theres probably a reason for it IMHO.

If they experience pain while shitting/peeing, they equate litter box = pain.

Keep the litter super clean, no big changes in diet (i.e. switching brands of food) make sure water is clean...if not, vet time.
