I was doing legs the other day, and my third movement was lunges so i grabbed the 85lb barebell and did 20 steps for my 3rd set i grabbed the 115 8 steps in i got winded so i let the bar goo of my back. Next thing you know the so called "trainer" came up to me and told me not to drop the weight again. I guess they just dont like noise at that gym.
Soo how hardcore is your gym???

something like that actually. I screwed up my form when squatting low, and knew that I'd only get it up my hurting my knees, so I just let the bar slide off my neck. The gyms on the second level of a building, so it resonates pretty good when it hits. This gym is full of a mostly buck 20 posers, so yes I was approached by the staff and told to not drop it again.
So not hardcore

My gym is pretty hardcore.. we train without shirt with chalk and ammonia.. just like the crossfit people haha I am pretty sure i could throw weight at the wall if needed.

But I'm not really hardcore myself.. my deadlift is not 400 yet and i weight only 170... I like the potential tho

There is nothing "Hardcore" about dropping weights. Unless the weights are designed to be dropped ie. bumper plates. Most of the guys I see dropping weights are just trying to make noise to draw attention to themselves. Or they suck at weightlifting, one of the two. My gym allows people to drop weights although the people who do should quit life.

I lift for the most part, advanced weight and not once in my life have I dropped a weight except for the one time 15 years ago when some fag stole the clips off my EZ curl on the preacher and I did a right left dump.

Unless your muscle is tearing I would expect it to be controlled down to the ground.

actually as a fact I never seen anybody drop weight at my gym either..

True but after a hard set of lunges i dont want to risk injury and press the barbell over my head so i just let it go it doesn't happen every set. I still don't think thats enough to be told anything im sure the weights can handle being dropped.

If it were my equipment I would ask you to use a weight you can safely handle, use a power rack, or leave. No offense is intended, I just don't think dropping weights is necessary most of the time.

Also, most equipment isn't designed to be dropped. Especially the heavy stuff. I've helped fix gym equipment and spoke a lot with a guy who had been doing it for a long time. Eventually stuff breaks or becomes loose and can't be tightened properly (mostly the screw tightened dumbells). At the University gym the dumbells only went up to 135 because the heavier ones were getting broken by people dropping them and eventually they stopped getting fixed.

all the heavy dumbells in my gym are fubar now from people dropping them. Rubber dumbells with a rubber covered floor, and they are ruined.

i can handle the weight but its walking lunges and i went to failure... too bad they didn't say anything when fouad and his crew bent all the barbells in the gym and toss the dumbbells 10ft... I wonder why???

CanadianIron
09-01-2010, 12:21 AM
Going to failure with your legs shouldnt disable your upper body, still not sure why you couldnt let the weight down properly.

if u do lunges u should know how i felt when u take ur body to failure and ur about to faint.

I know what you mean. Your legs start shaking uncontrollably etc... If it becomes an issue with the gym you can always do them in a squat rack. Either alternating legs or focus on one then the other. For me I do them one leg at a time and alternate the starting leg for each set.

Fouad should know better. All pro bodybuilders should but their videos tell a different story. Gym etiquette is very important. If there were 10 commandments of lifting one would include dropping weights unnecessarily.

519Muscle
09-01-2010, 12:49 AM
^^^i guess but sometimes i like doing them walking.
as for fouad i dont think that he has been approached once i just think that if the trainer can approach me he should build up enough balls to approach fouad. Even though the intensity that fouad trains with it totally motivating.

maybe using dumbbells would help? thats how i do em... easier to put the weights down after a set than a barbell.

CanadianIron
09-01-2010, 02:07 AM
I did lunges yesterday, if you can stand up after your reps you can take 1 step forward into a rack.

Unless you're using an olympic weightlifting bar (and no, not all standard bars are weightlifting bars) and bumper plates you should not be dropping the weight. I'm guessing you dumped an 85lb preloaded barbell? That's how equipment gets wrecked... I train at an exclusive powerlifting gym (ie: no public members) and you don't see guys dropping bars. It wrecks equipment and will definitely piss off the people that have to pay for it.

I also have a gym set up in my basement and and I'd say it's pretty 'hardcore'. Squat rack, deadlift platform and a bench... All you need to get a good workout. I don't go dropping my weights though because I know that's how bars get bent, cement floors get chipped and cracked and racks get ****ed up.

Why does everyone think when a PT tells them not to do something that they are just too hardcore for the gym? Maybe you just don't know what you are doing?

You should have told him you felt something pull in your back. See what his response is then...

you can't walk the back back to the squat rack and unrack there?

if you clasify young punks that have to have their GQ style hair going on for them and have their tans perfect and benching a whole 200lbs hardcore, then my gym is way too hardcore for me...its this bloody new years BS that is driving me nuts...some days i can only get to the gym around 6ish and its nuts.. whatever happened to just going to the gym to workout rather then picking up and showing off!?!?!?!?!?
ok rant is done

I had to switch gyms because of that. Twice.

the problem with that is the squat rack is on the other side of the gym and area where you do lunges.

That is not hardcore on any level but their is no way u can escape those people, sometimes i wonder why they even allow them to workout...But in some gyms around my area u cant even wear a beater while working out. Don't u think thats a little to strict??

sorry! I couldn't resist!

seriously... i think if you drop a weight because of failure or risk of injury or whatever... it's one thing... the dorks who throw them around to be noisy is another. I was squatting and somehow got the weight OFF the rack, but aftr my set, I couldn't get it back ON the rack... it was a little high, so I wnt on my toes and still couldn't get it up there... so I dropped it and jumped! (there was nobody around at the time)... I was embarassed but whatever... shit happens

... how did hard core go to dropping weights?

To me hard core would be a platform, bumpers, at least 2 racks, dumb bells to 200, chalk, chains, bands, safety squat bar, trap bar, buffalo bar, a couple of decent olympic bars, a reverse hyper, a ghd, a sled for the parking lot. Sadly this gym doesn't appear to exist in winnipeg.

I drop weights once every deadlift day when my grip gives out. Then I switch to over/under, then straps.

I hate the word "hardcore" but I personally think my gym kicks ass.

4 Power racks with lifting platforms, bumper plates, chalk provided, tractor tires. The owner is big on oly lifting and is available to help with clean/snatch form. I train with a CIS running back and a prospective CFL lineman.

In the last two years, I’ve had to change gym twice – once due to gym supervisor at YMCA complaining about the way I dress (jean shorts and lumberjack jacket to warm up), the amount of weights I use and dropping the weight (happened once due to sweaty palm). I was glad to leave cause they didn’t have enough weights anyway.

Second gym was due to I didn’t fit in – it was one of those expensive rip-off gym where there were hardy any weights – but the trainers never bothered me once I stared training without a shirt…

The gym I now train is great except for too many kids but that’s OK with me…I’m a single dad and I love kids - gives me a chance to monitor them so I can advise and demonstrate the correct forms and techniques before they hurt themselves.

So you just peeled off and started working out...LMAO I've never seen anything like it. I did that only once but it was after hours and i owned the gym. The fitness club i train at now doesn't allow muscle shirts even, must be a sleeved shirt...i guess so i don't scare the weak. lol

It's now a policy, you have to have a shirt on...at the time I was so frustrated I didn't give a dam since I was joining another gym anyway...

My gym wasn't hardcore enough so I left.... What actually happened is they were bothering me about renewing my membership when I was literally under the bar about to squat. Should have let me figure things out after I was done like I asked them to (strike one). Tried increasing my rate and forcing me into an auto withdrawl contract instead of my cheaper month-to-month membership (strike 2). The lady was pushy and rude (game over). Plus the gym is full of douchebags so the choice became much more clear.

Didn't get to train today and it looks like I'll be joining a Goodlife which is where a lot of the powerlifters in town train so it should be fun. Definitely more hardcore!

lol, no kidding. i checked out a Goodlife in the Manulife center... i couldn't believe how ridiculously small that place was. i was the only one in there lifting heavy (heavy for me anyway).

i like Gold's gym. there seem to be more opening up in Canada which is good. the one in Peterborough is big, has a lot of equipment.. and is reasonably priced.

If you guys are ever thinking about branching off and opening another location I know a great little spot in Southern Ontario. Not that I need a monolift any time soon but it would be cool to try it...plus it would bring all the strong people to the gym.
