Hey everyone, was scouring the net looking for some info and thought I'd try a Canadian source seeing as I'm a Canuck!I just turned 34 in February, am self-employed and usually work a minimum of 60hrs a week.I'm really starting to feel alot older than I am.I'm 6' tall and weigh 220lbs.I have a very thick frame especially chest and arm area.It looks like I use to work out but never really have.I'm starting to eat properley and watch my calories.I'd like to lose another 20lbs.I want to start going to the gym but don't really know where to start.Should I make an appointment with the on staff fitness advisor or could any one recommend a program or book that I could possibly follow?I'm really not looking to get cut.I'm looking to get thick.Big arms, chest legs etc, as well as lose a little fat. Thanks for your help and advise.

Hey , thanks for the warm reception. Some one recommended some Arnie book.Said it was the best he's read. But I may take you up on the offer of the Body for Life book. What about programs.Should I let the Gym take care of that or are their some programs in these books that may help?

Welcome to the site! Bump the others guys on their recommendations. Also don't forget there is a ton of great info in bodybuilding mags...the most up to date in some cases.

I've checked out alot of the muscle mags.Seems to be alot of hype and mostly ads for supplements.I'm just looking for good solid advise to build on.

body for life is a complete diet and exercise program. with many extras. If it was me i would take the cheap route. trainers are often very expensive and most are bullshitters!
i would buy a gym pass, and the body for life book. and if i didnt understand a exercise in it, i would ask on a site like this for help, or ask a gym member.

depends on the gym i guess as some if u ask for help they will give u the answer, where as some will make u hire a trainer even to show u how or what a certain exercise is. and i think thats bullshit.

well in your first post, u mentioned u wish to loose another 20lbs. this book will defiantely help u do that, and will build a bit of muscle along the way.
then when u get down to the weight u wish to be, then u can get into size routines and chnage the diet to match the extra work load.

you arent going to be able to loose fat and gain size at the same time, countrary to what some on here and in the world will tell u. Its hard for the genetic freak to do with or without drugs. Seeing as its still winter, i would concentrate on loosing the extra weight, then when summer hits start building again. no use being overweight in the summer when the ladies are looking.

as for the book. just private message me (pm) and i will supply u with our paypal or a phone number to pay with a credit card.

Thanks Phisque for the help.Much appreciated!I definetly want to lose the 20lbs and have read alot of the possibilty of losing fat while gaining muscle and agree with you on the fact of it being alot of BS!So I guess what I'll do is take your advise and drop the 20lbs while I work out just to get familiar with excercise and the routines. Thanks alot!

Ya a lot of them are like that. But there are a few of them that are good like Flex, Muscular Development etc.

Mind and Muscle (mindandmuscle.net) is an online magazine with dozens and dozens of very informative articles, for free. I highly recommend you check it out.

You've made a few good moves already : Asked a good group of people, and not bought into BBing mags. Also good at not picking up Arnies book. Yes it has a lot of good info in it, but its not what you need with the goals you outlined.

You are on the right path already, get in the gym and start enjoying yourself!

The more info you get, the more it'll help you. I read sites, mags, talk about it etc. Anything helps.
