View Full Version : Lubricating the weight slide on home gym?

I've got a Northern Lights gym from many years ago that I still use for upper pulley work but the slide doesn't glide anything like it did when new. Over the years I've used stuff like wd-40 (i know not a lube), various oils, but nothing gives it that brand new glide feel it once had. Anyone have a grease or something else they use and recommend?

I used to use white lithium grease on my equipment.

Awesome, just checked the profile on lithium grease and it looks like a winner. Thanks to both of you for your suggestions.

Graphite spray works real well also.........WD-40 is an actual anti-grease, dries right out and removes all lubrication properties, does more harm than good.....

you need a lube with sheer strength
gear lube
ask someone who has an outboard motor
if you can have a dribble.

I use silicon spray, works very well and no mess. Any grease will be messy, will catch and hold dust as well.

clean it with wd-40
then lube with gun oil spray or a silicone spray

ya i thought wd40 was supposed to be used to clean not lube?
if this doesn't work, is it an expensive part? could u just replace it?

its just metal on metal. a 2 pole slide the weight goes up and down on.

metal on metal.
this i why i recommended
something with sheer strength
(like gear lube). Think about two
gears turning together, metal on metal.

also looks like the pulleys are a bit stiff too. Silicon spray the best way to penetrate the pulley bearings?
Its not really an issue except on really light weight say 20lbs and less, but the gf does a lot of work in the lower range.

try silicone spray
I think this is what I used at the gym to lube up all the equipment. The can should come with a straw that attaches to the nozzle. Wipe off the excess with a rag.
