I love how coca-cola adds salt to make you more thirsty and in order to counteract the saltiness of the drink they add more sugar. What a ****ed up world we live in.

What I like is that he is open about the sample sizes, the methods used in the studies, and even his personal bias.

It is rare to see a case made so strongly based on fact.

Many academics have this attitude, very low leveled grounded people.

PS - is this a masters or doctorate lecture? I feel so stupid after watching, its not funny.

Alright just thought id comment because i actually learned one thing that affected me personally.

I recently couldn't figure out why i had high systolic blood pressure. I blamed the 250mgs of test i was on for 20 weeks. i went to my doc and he said u shouldnt have this because u eat the same thing everyday (very little salt) and u exercise and ur genetics are ok. Went to another doc who checked if i recovered from the cycle and everything was a ok. After PCT i eased up on my calorie intake and low and behold my BP went down. i couldnt figure out why. It turned out that, when i went on cycle, my calorie intake went up and i couldnt take eating my dry chicken and rice/yams alone, i drank a tall glass of orange juice with almost every meal, so lets say 3 glasses of OJ a day. As soon as calories went down to what i normally consume, i stopped drinking OJ. i never thought fructose (which is in OJ) could affect BP. But maybe this is why my BP went up, and back down.

Im gonna take this guys advice and cut out all drinks except water and milk. The only sugary drink i have is juice, and **** i never thought JUICES could affect me negatively.

It's an open university lecture. No shame in not having an undergraduate degree in biochemistry. Even without the backgrojund I thought he did a very clear job of explaining the hormonal interactions through the liver. I really enjoyed that part.

The tirade against coke and hfcs was just an added bonus.

best post in a long time.

very informative and unbiased. no longer will i be using fruit as my post workout carb source even though it contains fibre and is not classed as the poisonous HFCS.

He actually mentioned that fruit is good for you, as it doesnt contain anywhere near the amount of sugar that juices and sugar drinks do. Keep on fruitin, but my juicing days are over.

Yep, it's damn hard to EAT enough fruit to harm yourself - you would throw up! - and you do get vitamins, fibre etc...It's the juice = all of the bad/none of the good of fruit.

good point. I would still venture to say though that fruit is not as good for you as you thought it was (myself included)

This was a great video, definitely worth the 1.5 hours, it flew by.

After taking biochemistry courses in undergrad, I've been trying tell people with high cholesterol (in my family) that they should be worried about their sugar intake rather than their cholesterol intake! There's nothing wrong with eating eggs! But, hey I guess it's easier to spend the rest of your life on statins than reduce your sugar intake.

I was thinking about how backwards this whole thing is with the FDA and the corn producers, etc. I guarantee that if someone developed a pill that would stop fructose from turning into poison in your liver, people would pay $$$ for the pill instead of cutting back on sodas and ice cream.

Cost of food in 2010 is 25% less than it was in 1970.
Cost of healthcare (US) in 2010? 75% more than it was in 1970... go figure.

The sad thing is that coca-cola, pizza and other bad for you foods is the diet of almost every child until they educate themselves into realizing its bad....which most never do.
