Anyone have a source? All the major dept stores seem to hover around $1/lb which isn't awful but can suck when you want to go pickup a couple 25lb plates. I've been keeping my eye on craigslist for used plates but figured it might be worth asking around in here as well.
I'm not desperate, but if I found the right deal I'd stock up so I don't have to tear down every other bar just to load up the 6 footer.
Thanks.

i think fitness depot sells theirs for $0.89/lb....a lot of used sports equipment stores carry them for similar prices

Thanks. Never thought to check there since everything else seems to be jacked up. I've got some northern lights gear from there and figured I paid through the nose.
Any specific chains I can check for used weights or are you talking more independent shops? I've looked at places like National and SportChek and only saw new plates for around $1\lb.

"Play it again sports" carries used weights but only standard plates unfortunately. Like someone else said Fitness depot seems to be selling them for 0.89/lb and Fitness Source was selling them for 0.92/lb before Christmas.
I picked mine up at fitness depot for .52 about 8 years ago.

u will never see a price of .52 cents anymore. most plates are made overseas now and those countries have wised up to pricing. i have seen my prices jump from .29cents a pound my cost to around .80cents a pound now.
check kijii, or craigs list.
as for chains, go to a boat store. or a rope/chain store. i live on the island so it isnt hard to find a store here for chains

UPDATE:
I found a place in mississauga selling steel 35s for .40cents a lb. Here's his kijiji ad http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-sports-bikes-Dumbells-and-Olympic-Weight-Plates-W0QQAdIdZ174750908
The place is Refitness and they have lots of other gear they buy back from gyms upgrading to new equipment. I bought 6x35lb plates for around $80 :) He was out of 45s but did have lots of rubbercoated 35s which cost about twice as much, and I saw lots of dumbbells but wasn't interested.
Anyhow just thought I'd pass along the find. I'd say call first to see if he has what you're interested as he mentioned they blew through around 9000lbs in a month already...yes 9 thousand...apparently some dude bought 6000lbs and loaded it into his own vehicle\tank. Supercool guys to deal with. Cash no tax. Post back if you scored some cool stuff.
Cheers

When you say rubber coated you mean bumper plates or those crappy metal ones dipped in rubber?

check the pics in the kijiji ad. I'm not sure what bumper plates are but they looked\felt to me as just metal plates coated in rubber to reducing clanging noises. Why are those shitty? Either way they cost double the price so I skipped them.

Wallmart has plates cheaper than most fitness stores if you plan to buy new.

I paid this place a visit tonight, I bought a commercial grade Cybex Olympic Weight tree for $75.00. Great bunch of people with a warehouse full of equipment, if the board gym owners don't know of this place already they may want to pay it a visit, it's called Refitness in Mississauga.

Fitness depot's weights just dropped in price to $0.68 per pound. Go get em. We had already bought the bar so they took that off. The price would have been $250. But with the decrease in price plus bar it came to $180 for 300 lbs of CAP olympic weights. Now, all I need is the power rack.

I am slowly putting together my home gym. I've picked up a Smith Machine, Hack Squat, Power Rack, plates, dumbbells and barbells - all from Kijiji. Also, I am picking up mats this week - also from Kijiji. You may also want to try Craig's List.
