Not bad, Canada didn't even make the list!

In countries around the world, waistlines are expanding so rapidly that health experts recently coined a term for the epidemic: globesity. One in three of the world’s adults is overweight and one in 10 is obese.

Here are the Top 10 Fattest Countries in the world, based on national health surveys the World Health Organization (WHO) compiled between 2000 and 2008.

1) American Samoa, 93.5 percent (of population that's overweight)

Traditionally, Pacific Islanders ate native foods high in complex carbohydrates and low in fat. That began to change dietary habits as family members abroad introduced those back home to Western eating.

2) Kiribati, 81.5 percent

Between 1964 and 2001, food imports to the least developed Pacific nations, such as Kiribati, increased six-fold. Those imports led to a huge influx in fatty food and processed meat, such as Spam and mutton flaps (fatty sheep scraps).

3) U.S., 66.7 percent

In the early 1960’s, 24 percent of Americans were overweight. Today, two-thirds of Americans are too fat, and the numbers on the scale keep going up. Health experts attribute the rise to an over-production of oil, fat and sugar -- the result of government farm subsidies started in the 1970’s that made it much cheaper to manufacture products like high fructose corn syrup, a common ingredient in processed foods.

4) Germany, 66.5 percent

When Germany found out that it was the fattest nation in Europe, health experts blamed the usual suspects: beer, fatty foods and lack of physical activity. Like the rest of the world, Germans are suffering from an easy availability of junk food and more sedentary jobs and lifestyles.

5) Egypt, 66 percent

In the 1960’s, Egypt produced enough food to feed its people a steady diet of red meat, poultry, lentils, maize and dairy products. But by the 1980’s, the population had outgrown food production, leading to an increase in food imports that created poorer eating habits.

6) Bosnia-Herzegovina, 62.9 percent

Smoking, drinking and eating unhealthy foods spiked during the war that ravaged the country from 1992 to 1995. Those living just above the poverty line are gaining weight the fastest, partly because of the tendency to fill up on cheap processed foods high in calories and low on nutritional value.

7) New Zealand, 62.7 percent

Researchers found that how much time New Zealand children spend watching television is a better predictor of obesity than what they eat or how much they exercise. The study found that 41 percent of the children who were overweight by age 26 were those who had watched the most TV.

8) Israel, 61.9 percent

In the past 30 years, the number of obese Israelis has tripled. As in most developed countries, obesity is most prevalent among Israelis with less education.

9) Croatia, 61.4 percent

Croatia is a victim of the globalization of the food market, which tends to suppress traditional diets as cheaper processed foods from the U.S. and Europe flood store shelves.

10) United Kingdom, 61 percent

A recent survey ranked the British among the bottom third of European nations in physical exercise, leading Health Secretary Andy Burnham to comment, "We're really in danger of being known as the best in the world for watching sport, but one of the worst for getting out there and doing it for ourselves."

It seems like Canada can't be that far behind. Just sit at the mall and people watch for fifteen minutes and you'll see at least 50% overweight and 10% obese.
It's pretty sad considering the amount of nutritional and exercise information available to us.

It might seem that way... but when you cross the border and hit up a mall you are BLOWN AWAY... id say there are twice as many fat people and WAAAAYYY more morbidly obese people... if you see a 400lb'er in Vancouver, you'll stop and watch them.. there arent very many at all... I think Vancouver is one of the fittest cities in the world though, so I have a tainted view of how fat Canadians are.

I was in detroit a couple of years back.

Theres were no sidewalks in the suburbs
People drove to go next door.
The normal serving sizes in restaurants was double what they are here.

I loved the serving size, but the lack of sidewalks disturbed me.

All of this talk about fattest has nothing to do with fat but weight/height ratio or as these experts call, Body Mass Index or BMI which was created back in the 1800's. Yes, 1800's! People were shorter, weren't hitting the gym nor did they have access year round to nutritious food. Though teenagers also didn't spend hours on end playing video games.:)

How about removing athletics or the good old national fitness programs from schools being the reason people are heavier. Yes, we wouldn't want kids to compete....

The New Zealand study seems to be the only one the came to a real & logical conclusion.

Another "study" done by "experts"....****in' yeah...

uhh a nurse or doctor aren't nutritional counselors. I care more about what they know than what they look like when it comes to getting ME healthy or saving my life.

As far as I know, phys ed is manditory til gr 10, and from what I remember not participating was a fail...

Regardless of what you define as overweight, I believe the stats... americans are fat as hell. A healthy body weight should include a very small amount of fat, a large muffin top isnt a natural build, humans didnt evolve to eat 3 square meals a day, we SHOULD all be skinny... there are actually people out there who limit their calorie intake to 1500-2000cals because it can extend your life span significantly.

I just found this out this week from a teacher friend of mine:

In Alberta, a child/teenager does not any longer have to participate in phys-ed classes as they may build a complex due to low self esteem by not being able to do the games and exercises some of the other fit children can. Now that is complete bullshit if you ask me!!

While BMI can certainly be misleading if you are a bodybuilder, there has not been a sudden explosion of 10's of millions of new bodybuilders. These buggers are fat. Really fat. Not fat like holy bejeebus i'm almost 20% I'd better get my ass on the treadmill. I mean like 30, 40, 50% bodyfat and with no sign of turning it around.

Sucrose and fructose addictions are a huge source of the problem. When you combine these with overeating there is no satiety so you just keep eating.

Except for the huge cascade of fat production up'ing sugar consumption might be a great way of increasing appetite while bulking.

I'm surprised feed lots haven't started feeding cows fructose with their corn and steroids. I suppose it would reduce the meat quality too much to get them their "grade a".

Years back when I was living in the States, I took my gymnastics team to a water park. I was blown away at how many obese people were there walking around with bathing suits they shouldn't have been wearing. It was really sad.

Nurses are really bad for keeping junk at the nurses station and making all kinds of excuses in the book for not eating properly. I trained a few of them and all of them always had some kind of reason.

Canadians numbers have also increased considerably... The sad part are the kids that are now in their teen years with adult diseases. i.e. diabetes etc

This could very well be the first generation in the modern world that lives a shorter lifespan than their parents ...[sad]

I think it's commonly because of their foods. The main reason for that is the culture, the foods, the time they frequently eat and many more which is under their lifestyle. It's hard to change that culture because they can face it almost everyday. The only chance to change that culture can be based on the person's perspective and nonetheless it's the culture itself.

I think a lot of the problem comes from ready made foods. Too many families have pantries and freezers stocked with ready to eat foods that are not at all healthy.

It is harder to cook a meal from scratch than it is to eat something prepared. It is human nature to be lazy and eat the crappy food.

If you take the time to make your own stuff you see what you are putting in it. It really makes you think about what you are eating. Now the tricky part is to figure out a way of making people do that. Don't have any idea how?

After having traveled there and having I can concur with this. Most of the kids are into video games or just sitting watching TV (which is fine, but everything in moderation, people!). Doesn't help all the 'fatty' foods are miles cheaper than healthy options

Being obese is an option or illness.

I have 3 brothers: same parents, same upbringing, different lifestyles

1 is obese, another is getting there the other is fat.

I am the only one that is different
