just a rant. Seeing as this is where i live, and closing this mill will cost 300 jobs, i grow a little more scared to live in this town. The pulp mill isnt doing well either, and the 2 mines out this way, one may go on strike this year and there is rumblings that the other may close.

Bad timing for me to just buy a rental property, hopefully something drastic changes or alberta will soon have 20,000 more people living in it.

I new this was going to happen eventually but was hoping it would be 5-10 years down the road, not this May.

blahhhhhhhhhhhh

And it ain't over yet. The plan is to close a lot more mills here in B.C.. Port Albernie is probably next on the list. I realize that there are a lot of jobs lost but it wouldn't break my heart to see these murdering bottom feeders (Timberwest) leave this province.
Western is on the same program, you'll see more of their mills closing in the near future especially with the market being what it is.

Good thing you're not here in Ladysmith, next to Qualicum i think we are the retirement capital of the island.

Actually some of your products are catered to the older folk. I told a buddy of mine who lives in Comox about your store and he bought some of your products. He's 57.

When it comes to realstate i guess it all depends how you look at it. If the mill in Port does close my wife and i are going to buy some rentals. The one thing about the island is investing in realastate anywhere south of Cambell is a good investment in the long run. Look at Tahsis, when i worked there about 5 or 6 years ago you could buy a house for $15,000, now you can't find anything under $200,000. Tahsis for Christ's sake!!!!

well thats good to know about my fitness store. The gym on the other hand wont do well with old folks, as 1. we are upstairs, and 2. i dont see elderly working out.

i too cant believe the housing in Tahsis. there is nothing there but a bar and grocery store. u are lucky u have ****ing air. but yet people are moving there.

there entire forestry market sucks in this province though, and CR is blue collar jobs, without those this will be a town full of grey haired people.
i am not looking forward to 2008 in this town, maybe i will be proven wrong, god i hope i am proven wrong!

Sorry bro but i have no idea what you just said here..

The market driving Tahsis are Americans, they are buying for the fishing there. Very seasonal, so the population is unchanged, still only the bar and grocery store.

The forest sector will always be good. I'm a faller and there has for the last couple of years been 2-3 jobs for every faller out there. The manufacturing of the wood is where the big changes are happening. The wood i fall will not necessarily be manufactured here in B.C. The same amount of meter's will still be cut year after year.

I didn't know you also owned a gym. Here in Ladysmith 50% of the members at the gym are retired people. Most of them don't do much with the free weight's, they are more likely to be on the cable's and machines. But there sure are a lot of them there.

Holy shit i can't beleive this!! I worked in Ainsworth country, Lillooet and 100 mile a few years ago. I have a brother inlaw that has worked at the Lillooet mill for 25 years. Mind you it's only a veneer plant now and it seemed to have made money every year. Damn i'll have to give a call..

I haven't heard much about Lillooet but Chasm is hurting as well as the 100 Mile Mill. There is rumor and only rumor that Tolko may remove a couple more shifts also...... Who knows.....

I went and checked the Ainsworth web site and it looks like most of their OSB mills are shutting down for extended maintenance. Even their operations in the States.

Did you know that Ainsworth is the largest supplier of OSB in North America? Bit of trivia i didn't know. Not bad for a guy that started out with a one skidder logging operation.

I work for ainsworth. Veneer and plywood is running full bore with the occasional shut down due to the high dollar and the american housing starts being slow right now, nothing more than a week or to here and there. OSB is in the tank right now but ainsworth has a huge war chest of cash to keep running and put the other mills out of business by flooding the markets and starving off competitors.

But how much are they willing too loose? I believe Tolko and West Fraser are bigger and will hold on longer... This wouldn't be the first time Ainsworth went into the tank either....

From what they say they can go on for severall years like this. And are expecting it to be like this for another year or two minimum. But if you make it through there will be a bigger piece of pie later on.
