View Full Version : Wrist pain
Every time I do close grip bench press I feel some pain in my right wrist. It's wasn't too bad until today. I kinda pushed it through 3 sets and after I was barely able to pick up a dumbbell. Anyone ever have this problem?

I've had similar pains. I focused on keeping my grip super tight. If I ever loosen up, whether it's on upright rows or bench press, I'll start to feel it in my wrists.
After the first 3 reps I had to widen my grip but now its shoulder width a part which is a bit too much. Isn't it?

The closest I go is pinkies on the edge of the rough and smooth. No one take that out of context.. :)

When you lift is your wrist roughly neutral or is your hand extended back towards your forearm?

I go just in from shoulder width with straight wrists, and it cured my sore wrist/shoulder issues 100%

I have no problem when my arms are straight but when I touch my chest the wrist gets bent to the outside and the tendon that attaches the thumb kills. My thumb is still numb and it's been 7hrs. What do you guys think of not doing close grip bench press and just doing dips? Close grip is the only exercise that bothers my wrist.

I will try this the next time.

I hang gutters for a living. I use a drill all day. Some days my wrists kill, I invested in a pair of wrist supports that i use every once and a while. I HATE using them but sometimes they are a must.

When you do "close grip" the important point is the position of your elbows not really your actual grip on the bar. Take your arms and tuck your elbows so they are directly by your sides. Your wrist should be directly above your elbow. This is the position you want to be in when doing a "close grip" bench press. Having your hands closer together will only put increased stress on your wrists. It is not the proper way to do the exercise and has no real advantage for improving muscular development.
Also keep in mind that the wrist always stays above the elbow so the bar will naturally travel down below the chest when it touches your torso. Unless you have arms like ShortDave :).
So this way my hand will be approximately shoulder width apart. I always tuck my elbows in but I thought that the hands were supposed to be closer together. When I have my hands shoulder width apart I have some discomfort but no serious pain and I can deal with discomfort.
Man did I do a number on my wrist. Usually when I do something to myself the next day I feel somewhat better. I guess I am getting old.
