Feb 18th is the new stat holiday. Is anyone getting time off work or school for this? A lot of the people I've talked to around here have to work regardless. Whats the point if not all employers embrace it?

Employers never "embrace" a stat holiday.

I just read up on it a bit more. I guess in Ontario workers are entitled to 9 stat holidays. Anything more than that is at the employers discretion.

I think we need 12 stat holidays.

Sick thing is that Remembrance Day is not an official stat with some schools and universities still open. What a FUKING SLAP IN THE FACE TO VETERANS.

Nope. I fall under the Canandian Labour Code and since this is a Provincial holiday, I won't get it until it's negotiated into our Collective Agreement.

Try living in the maritimes. NB-7, NS-5, PEI-4 One more nail in the coffin of why everyone moves out west.

****, the maratimes get few stat holidays, but none of them work more than 4 months a year before they hit up welfare, so what does it matter??

(Stirring the pot, baby!!!)

Uh, yeah..

LOL, No actually if you're thinking of industries like the fisheries I think it's more like work less than half the year, make a pretty decent amount from that (hard life though) and then collect EI for the rest. Minimum wage is lowest here, so it's not hard to see why people would the welfare route...even when other people are paying for it. That's why they should put serious limitations on it and maybe that way there won't be so much abuse. Maybe if more people got fed up with their idiotic governments (local, municipal, federal) then we could get the minimum wage up, reduce cost of living, get people off financial assistance, increase stat holidays, etc..

It's almost like they're trying to make/keep the maritimes down so it'll be a source of cheap Canadian labour to attract companies to pour money into their coffers. Don't blame anyone for going out west to want to actually have a life.

I actually think it is a good thing remembrance day is not a holiday. Most work places and definitely schools pay tribute to our vets, if it was a holiday the significance would quickly be forgotten.

I'm off for family day and plan on doing something with the fam.
