For identical machines other then the chip is the i7 worth an extra 300 bucks?

It depends on your intended usage. The 720QM is a quad core processor while the P8700 is a dual core.
For everyday usage, the P8700 will be plenty, but if you need the extra speed for video rendering or other application which are highly CPU intensive, it's definitely worth it.
Otherwise you probably won't notice much of a difference and you'll get better battery life with the P8700.

Thanks. Think i'll stick with the 8700 then. The extra battery life would be more important to me.

I'm running an enginerring sample QX9300 with 8 gigs of ram on my laptop with windows 7 and it runs ms word just fine.
If I was running visual studio in a virtual machine with 3 more virtual machines running to emulate a networked system I might want a little more jam but otherwise the only thing that makes me sad is you can't upgrade video cards in a laptop.
