strange size display and a odd processor. I'd go for the i7 and a better display personally, especially at that price, but thats just me.

i will never again buy a computer out of the box. I will get one made for me.

store computers have too much shit on them that takes up memory, and causes compatibility issues.

What do you need this laptop to do?

Do you plan on playing games on it? Video editting? 3d rendering? Or is it basic office use / DVD burning.

good idea for desktops, normally a poor idea for laptops.

First thing you must consider when buying a laptop is warranty/service.

Lenovo have the BEST service in my opinion. The Lenovo thinkpad serie is really well made. Asus is great also. They have great gaming laptops

i have a Vaio desktop from a few years back...works great but like others have said to much preloaded garbage. If you chose to get it before installing anything...REMOVE all the crap!

No gaming. I mainly work with the adobe suite but nothing too major. I also run alot of apps at the same time sometimes using more then one monitor. I probably could get away with a lower end unit but I want to make sure its good to go for years to come.

I'm basically looking to spend $1200 so I want to make sure I get the best for my money. I was looking at the Dell XPS last night and for the same price I can get a vary similar machine with a better processor (not the i7) and a 500 G hard drive with a 7200 RPM...Little hesitant with Dell though... decisions decisions.

Thank for everyones advice thus far. Leveno I'm not comfortable with for some reason. It's basically IBM right?

I use Dell with no issues. I also have Vaio's. Just do not get an HP. For cleaning things up use http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ it is a great program for removing unwanted programs.

Lenovo is IBM, VERY well built and outstanding repair service.
I wouldn't touch Dell with a 10' pole. Their service is horrible.

Asus offer great laptops (2 years warranty, they even cover physical damage)

If you can spend few more $$$

while we are on the subject... any recommendation for a gaming laptop under 1500$ ??

Came across this:
http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=ns153cf_fs_ch5bfs3&c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&dgc=AF&cid=3881&lid=77903&acd=CAqD7bLWUPI-lI.aBOXyoslXSyU5jP_hyA
Studio 15 laptop core i7 Radeon HD4570
You can removed the external HD and change to 1080p. It comes out to around $1200.
Dunno much about video cards though, so don't know if that's what you want. My guess for gaming you'd want one of the best video cards?

If I had $1500 to spend I would probably go with this:
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10126072&catid=

Another option:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220639

The GTX260 is a much better chip than the HD4570.
