I take 50g dextrose PWO with 10iu slin and glutamine.

Well, if you take raw dextrose, you will know my pain.

It makes me want to puke every time. It taste so sweet and shitty. Like a putrid lingering syrupy taste.

Today, I added 1 table spoon vanilla extract, and it really helped. It was not bad at all.

I've been wondering.. is dextrose really necessary? I see you're using slin along with it... but what about for people who don't use slin?

I tend to add some maple syrup in my shake, along with 1/2 banana... is that not enough sugar for post-workout?

you need carbs post work out preferably within 30 minutes to replenish muscles to avoid catabolizing. This will also provide an insulin spike, for further nutrients and protein.

you need it

right... i guess its just easier to toss a scoop of dextrose in the shake as opposed to using a bunch of other stuff.

according to nutritiondata.com the 1/2 banana and 1tbsp of maple syrup i use adds up to around 28 grams of sugar combined. maybe i'll use a whole banana.

id use the dextrose, but i prefer to use non-processed ingredients as much as possible.

not sure if sucrose, and fructose is the best choice.... might want to ask P or someone.

i see bananas are high in glucose, so you are good, but you definately need to supplement with something. whether it is dextrose, glucose, or whatever...

there was a diet on nexus I followed for a while when I was creeping on that board that included 50 g of dextrose to spike insulin post workout...i tried, but that shit was nasty...the diet was great, but the dextrose was stanky...SAMANTHA stanky (milhouse's ex gf)

any idea about the diet i'm talking about? link? i used to print stuff off of that forum until i ran out of ink!

I prefer waxy maize, tasteless and gets the job done.

I also throw some dextrose in the water bottle and drink that while working out. The stuff i use taste's all right, i've never tried raw, didn't even know about it actually.

I mix the dextrose with a bit of gatorade powder for the flavor. Comes out tasting like gatorade with extra sugar :)

some great ideas.

i buy dextrose at the wine making store for CHEAP

I prefer waxy maize but i am hostile towards supplement companies who charge $50 for a tub of carbs that likely cost 2$ to make

Agree 100%. Dextrose is more than enough and costs pennies.
When I was doing CKD a couple years ago, my last three meals of the day was 150g of dextrose with whey. That was awful. Put it in a huge water bottle. Usually ended up eating though because I was so hungry and sick of pure liquid meals for half a day.

My PWO shake is:

50 g Whey
50 g maltodextrin
1 tbls minced flax seed (pre-contest only)

Any problem with this?

Why the flax pre contest?

i find fresh fruit to be a better alternative for a post workout carb replenishment. i used dextrose for a while but its just empty sugar really.

whole fruits like apples, bananas, and berries have useful vitamins, minerals, and nurtrients as well as the carbs you need PWO. i will always choose whole foods over a processed sugar devoid of any nutrients from now on.

fructose is not glucose

but in general I agree with your sentiment.

Sorry, I should have been more clear...I do take flax 365...I just usually take in my morning shake, which is exactly the same as my PWO shake. I only use the flax in my PWO shake when i start dieting. I also tke my fish oils with each meal.

But what is the idea behind flax in your PWO shake pre-contest?

Pure dextrose is not that bad. As another said, mix it with regular gatorade for taste and to save some $$$. About the fruit comment... Do you think adding fiber in your post workout meal is a good idea when you want the sugars and proteins in your system as fast as possible? Do you think fructose increases insulin as much as dextrose?

i think it is common knowledge to avoid fruit for serious BB's and take maltodext or dextrose or maize etc. etc. instead.

however, for a health perspective, fruit is the way to go I would think

I just use powdered Gatorade... it contains dextrose opposed to regular bottled gatorade which contains fructose. It tastes great and has added electrolytes, which i find helps a lot in re-hydrating after training. I usually take in 1.5-2 scoops of the gatorade with 10-15 grams of glutamine immediately post workout and then 60 grams of whey 20-30 minutes later.

I didn't realize there was a difference between the powdered and the bottled gatorade. To clarify I do use powdered as well. Mine is 1 scoop Dextrose, half scoop orange gatorade powder, 2 scoops vanilla whey protein, 2 scoops glutamine. Tastes like orange creamsicle and very cheap to make. At first I did use 2 scoops of gatorade powder but it was cheaper to use dextrose instead. I buy mine at bulk barn.

Yup, there is a difference...regular gatorade contains fructose and glucose but the powdered version contains dextrose...the fruit punch flavour tastes killer...

Frustose = not even close to the insulin response you'd get from dextrose or waxy maize. Fructose is a terrible source for a PWO carb as it is inferior to dextrose and waxy maize in replenishing glycogen levels PWO.

While surfing the net I seemed to get the idea that a during work out shake was a good Idea. So I throw 2 scoops of powdered Gatorade plus 1 scoop of protein and two tea spoons of glutamine into a 1 liter bottle.

After my workout I add one table spoon of brown sugar plus one tea spoon of creatine plus two scoops of protein plus 1 scoop of Gatorade to a half liter of water as a post work out shake.

Am I on the right track here?

I read something that suggested spiking insulin actually stunted growth hormone secretion.... is there any true to this or any studies backing this up?

For my PWO on powerlift days my dextrose is in the form of Rockets candies; pure dextrose, plus they taste ****ing awesome ! Not sure if it's a bad idea but it has seemed to be pretty good thus far.

Yeah I did the same on CKD diet. They were sooo good to be able to have them and not hurt the diet lol
