I was just wondering how many of you do head crushers for triceps and if you do it heavy. I used to do it really heavy(for me) and started developing serious elbow pain. I decided to drop the weight and do the reps really slowly and I am getting a much better workout and my elbows don’t hurt anymore. I was doing 135lbs for 4 reps on my last set and now I am doing 100lbs for 6-8. Even though the weight is less my triceps get a much better pump and I was actually sore the next day.

In the past it was felt that flaring out the elbows was the prime culprit.Elbow wreckers was what the movement was called, iirc.

It's called skull crushers... but that's OK :)

What you are feeling is called tendinitis... when traing bis and tris stick to a weight that you can handle for 10-12 reps... they are tiny muscles that don't need stupid weight to make them grow... tendinitis will f you real bad... every pushing motion will make you suffer...

I had that problem too. What solved it???
Well I used to arc the bar so that at the top of the movement the bar was over my mouth. Now I raise it in a line perpendicular to the floor. The bar will end up away from your head (a couple of inches). Hopefully, I've explained it well enough for you to understand. I'll try to get a video of it and post it up. Worked very well for me - no more pain.

I used to get elbow pain from these then I stoped locking out at the top and everything is fine, it also has the added bonus of increasing the time under tension for the tris as well which I think makes it a win/win.

i had this pain for a couple of months had to really take it easy to heal up, couldnt dip, benching hurt, just take it easy for a while, also i find there is less pressure when i do them seated behind my head with the ezcurl bar

I start really light. with like a couple 10s on each side and do high reps. I feel that warms me up good when I go heavier I'm fine.
Skull crushers, like most tricep exercises, and as the above mentioned, are a real 'form' exercise. It's so easy to do them wrong. When it starts getting heavy there are so many ways to cheat, again as above, flared elbows, not perpendicular to the floor, etc.
