Ok just curious as to how it works, ie, do you ask a gym for employment and they pay you as a PT and or do you find your own clients and train them at whatever gym you ask them (the client) to train e.t.c?

...hope this made sense Im high on cold medicine LOL forgive me!

lol nice spelling on the title.
most corporate gyms will hire you and the sales staff will set up clients or client interviews for you and the customer basically pics one of the personal trainers that they feel fits best for them. You need to come in with your certification and insurance before you are able to work though

I do it the other way, I pay the gyms I work at a monthly fee, I get clients and then I charge them whatever I want.

I looked into this cause I was interested in doing personal training at the Goodlife Fitness where I workout. As it turns out with Goodlife(I don't know what it's like for other gyms) you have to get your own clients. To start you are getting $17/hr which in Calgary is absolute shit but the gym charges your client $70/hr. There are 5 steps of PT so $17/hr is step one and every other step goes up by $7/hr. To go to step 2 you need some courses which is pretty easy, however to get to step 3 you need a ton of courses or Kinesiology degree. To get to step 4 you definitely need a Kinesiology degree and not sure for step 5. So without the Kinesiology degree you can make only $24/hr and probably $31/hr after a few years. Goodlife also doesn't allow you to train more then 26hrs/week because you have to do promotion and sales(so that the gym can get more clients). When you are doing this you only get $10/hr no matter what level you are. New clients that the gym gets without you, you are required to train for 3 discounted sessions. The client pays $23/hr and you get $12 out of that. This is why you need those 14hrs available. So after I found all this out I figured that it would not be the best thing for me to do. I haven't looked at any other gym yet but I know that World's pays $18/hr to start instead of $17/hr. Goodlife does not allow part time work either.

Now that is interesting. What are the fees and you do not get benefits from the gym, right?

No benefits, I am completely independent, I charge 65-85 a session depending on what type of training the person needs. This includes dieting and training plans, I teach people why they are doing things so that they don't need me forever. I pay between 500 and 750 a month per gym that I train at.
This was a pretty sweet gig until I blew out my achilles, now having benefits would have been nice.

Shortdave=excellent trainer. i almost cried -it was great.

Actually all the trainers at Remington's know their shit. And you can comfortably grunt there and use chalk - and they have pictures of massive bodybuilders on their walls that you can stare at in between sets :D
