If you can make out my calves here you can see they whip around to the inside of my leg. What the **** is up with that? They look weird.

Yeah really. This is why I am hesitant to post pics. Last time I did someone said I looked like Sloth from the Goonies and I've been in therapy ever since.

That's funny !

But , once you lean up you should be able to get a better view of your shape. Other than that , you have to blame your parents for your looks.

What are the best way to hit them? High or low reps? I always hear conflicting theories for legs and calves.

Shaving them... well I do shave everything except my legs and ass, might as well include that. The night shift girl at the gym is hooking me up with a wicked tanning package so I'll be able to add some color. Around 200 minutes for $60.

I vary my calf work outs, some are stupid heavy with lower reps anywhere from 8-15, and on other days I rep them out anywhere from 15-25+ reps, I also hit them every 2nd or 3rd day, I have horrible genetics when it comes to calves!

I've stopped training my calfs and they have grown just over 1" in a year. Heavy Squats is the only thing I can attribute that to .

I also don't train my biceps and they have grown too. :)

I read in Flex for a calf routine to do some sets toes pointed neutral, some pointed inwards, some pointed outwards to build overall mass. Right now I'm stuck with just standing calf raises until the seated machine gets fixed. I usually do them before chest.

I wouldn't worry bout the toe thing for now, and the standing calf raise is better for building calf mass than the seated anyways

Back squats and front squats work for calves better than anything else i find. IMO you should be doing 2 leg workouts a week.

1 for super heavy lifting - Max lifts

1 (3-4days later) high rep - moderate weight (15-25 reps)

This burns tons of fat and will show you youre calves bro.

Even if I'm natural?

Another thing I always hear is for naturals to only train a body part once per week.

Your calves are your smallest problem in life... don't sweat it, just wear long pants :)

yes but you have to realize that your legs and calves take a certain amount of stress day after day after day just walkin around etc., so I believe in working them 2 times per wk also to to shock the f**kers into growth and by using like #8 said high and low HEAVY reps!

..natural or not ;)

Long pants suck :mock

I've sorted out my life (at least in my own mind). I know the road I'm going to take with it. So there won't be any funny life experience threads from me anymore.

I'm natural and ever since I started going heavy ( less than 5 reps ) I've grown more. I just need to take a few extra days off to recover. Don't worry about body parts , just stick with the compound exercises.

2 on , 2 off , repeat. ( what works for me )

I think people confuse overtraining with shitty training or shitty diet. You can easily train your legs 2x a week naturally as they are your biggest muscle groups and can handle the biggest workload.

Dont completely annihilate them 2x a week, but more frequent training for LEGS usually = better growth & strength. Its not like hitting your biceps or triceps. These muscles can take a ****ing beating.

Gotta disagree with training legs twice a week. They take longer to recover and the cns takes a beating. You could if you had a specific training set up to train them twice a week, but other body parts will be trained in consequence...

Here's some key points that help me with training calves.

Muscle#1 - Soleus. Outer calf muscle.
Mostly slow twitch fibres, so it responds
to high reps. Use exercises where the knee is bent
should be long time under tension.
Example: Seated calf raise, 2-1-2 tempo for 25-30 reps.
dont let the light weights needed to perform the high reps fool you,
your outer calves will grow for sure using high rep bent knee exercises.

Muscle #2 - Gastrocnemius. Hockey puck at the back.
Mostly fast twitch fibres, responds to bigger load
fewer reps. Use stiff legged exercises
Example: Standing calf raise, 3-0-3 tempo for 2-6 reps
Good technique is key, Note the 3 second concentric lift,
3 second eccentric lowering, this takes the bounce/momentum out of it. Keep your knees locked, bending is cheating.

Couple other things that will help growth.
Get on the Standing Calf or donkey machine,
load it up with weight and stretch your calves out.

After you develop some decent calf size, strength, endurance
try some plyometric calf training. They respond well
to the landing load. Look at ballet dancers, gymnasts,
vollyball players ,etc they all have nice calf development.
Dont go crazy with the weight until you get good with the
technique/balance.

Shaved them. I like the difference already. Just need a tan.

Dont shave them dude. Get a waxing kit... contrary to what women say, waxing doesnt hurt that bad and it lasts way longer... have fun scratching your ass off in the next couple weeks.

I haven't been itchy yet, but after I did it my brother said to use Nair (is that how you spell it?). He said you just put the cream on and it burns off the hair. Definately like the feel better as I was pretty hairy before.

CanadianIron
25-10-2009, 11:33 PM
Nair wont remove the roots, i tried it and its not strong enough for man hair, and you'll use a shit load if you keep doing your entire legs... I dont wax on a regular basis, but I have and its pretty economical. Unless you remove the root, the hair will grow out with a thick, blunt end and it will it and become ingrown... I shaved my leg (just one) because I was a curious stupid teenager and it was extremely uncomfortable a few days after.

Ritch

I`d just shave with an electric razor. **** shaving. To do it right, it takes way too much time and waxing is beyond painfull and you have to have alot of hair grown when you get it done. Plus you need someone to do it for you.

CanadianIron
25-10-2009, 11:59 PM
You could easily wax your own legs though...

Walking around on your tippy toes actually will make your calves bigger. A friend of mine who played basketball did these back in high school because he thought it would make him jump higher. His calves were so much bigger than any body part after 4 years it was ****ing ridiculous. He also looked like a fool whenever he walked.

My calfs did'nt really start to grow untill i started doing em EOD. If your not doing 600-800lb standing calf raises till you can't walk then your not going to see any REAL growth.

Im 6'2'' so i have to work extra hard to get leg muscles to really show. It fukin sucks, but it is what it is.:ji
