I recently posted a few threads with lots of DRAMA in them so I wanted to switch it up to talk about something I did for a couple years that was really fun.

I used to volunteer in between classes at my old school with a group that helped (severely physical & mentally) disabled people paint on canvas. Most of the people had very little if any use of their arms so they would guide us as to what they wanted painted either verbally or with a word book, and we would do our best to make their art a reality. I ended up building some really solid friendships with a couple of the people there and it's something I look back on and wish I could still do it.

Anyone else have any experiences?

Volunteering is for suckers. Never did it in my whole life. It's all about making $$.

Yeah, I volunteered at a youth center for over a year. Similar story I made a few friends, after volunteering I sat at the board of directors for roughly a year and a half so I had an good learning opportunity on how the place was run. It really gave me some insight on the non-profit sector.

I volunteered at a youth camp back when I was young... if I did it now I would just be a creepy old dude.

I have done lots and continue to give when I can.

Back around 4 years ago, I volunteered for a Salvation Army store, I loved the experience.
I did some accounting for a shelter operation here in town 2 years ago.
I did this for nearly 6 months.
I also volunteer at the Diabetes association for around 3 months.

And I am currently seeking and hoping to give out 3 hours of my time weekly. to the Red Cross.
I encourage give give to the needy when I can, it helps.

I had on for 8 years when I was growing up. Don't know my life would have turned out without his influence. Figure it's my duty to give back.

I too coached. JV football. Two seasons of 5 practices a week and a game on the weekend. It worked out to about 20 hours a week and way too much missed work so I had to stop.

I volunteer my expertise on everything at CBB...

I did volunteer at the Y for years and don't recommend anyone to do that as they are not a serious institution.

Its great to see that so many board members have volunteered in the past and are thinking of doing so once again.

I work in the non profit sector with youth and I can say firsthand, just how important volunteers are...

I have also coached HS football for 8+yrs....Never looked at is as volunteering though as I love football so much.

Bc Guide Dog Services its a labour of love. My wife and I assist training guide dog puppies from the time they are about 8 weeks old til about 18 months. Get them on a leader and practice stopping at doorways and stairs, crosswalks etc. Commands and patience is crucial. After that they move on to advance training for another intense 4-6 months then if they make they are paired up with someone who is visually impaired.

It's interesting you posted this topic Jersey... Something just came up today about volunteering at a horse rescue ranch up in Ojai. Was thinking about volunteering... seems like it'd be a good experience. I'm impressed with the kind of volunteering you guys have done.

I'm sorry but doing a walk/run for a charitable cause is not volunteer work in my opinion. That's like saying people who give money to charitable organizations are volunteering too.

Kudo's to helping the overall cause though but it really isn't my idea of volunteering.

I have volunteered with different youth organizations over the years. It is gratifying to show them that there are options to the dysfunctional situations that some live in.

I volunteered at a torch relay for special children. At a bingo hall when there was a fundraiser there (cant remember which one). I coached a few seasons of track and field. I and i tutored.

I think the run/walk thing is volunteering. A friend of mine did the breast cancer walk and unless you raise 2 grand (or something like that) they wont let u walk. Now this bro got rejected a lot when going to peoples houses for a donations. In the end he did pull through, but it took him about 3 months (or maybe longer) of work to raise what he did. But if u mean do something on a continous bases I understand that.

I want to be a volunteer Fire Fighter, but im not quite sure how to go about it. And im not sure what the qualifications(sp) would be to be able to do it.

Anyone ever done it? or have any info they'd like to share?

When you put in that context of having to meet a certain min. dollar amount which takes some effort more than just a couple of hours to walk/run in the event then I'd also consider that volunteering.

There was not a set dollar amount needed but i did go door to door , it doesnt really matter to me either way as it made me feel as though i was helping :).

basically just a drivers license (I believe), class 1 or 3 would be an asset, plus they pay for all your courses if ya wanted to pursue it further ;) as a career.
