View Full Version : Personnal trainer certification
I live in Calgary and I would like to start a certification to become a personal trainer. I am actually looking at Can-Fit pro Online certification program.
http://canfitpro.hkeducationcenter.com/CanFitPro_About.cfm
I am looking for something easy and cheap. I am actually in the process of getting ESL done, so I can start a Degree in Nutrition. Since I speak french I had to study English before I could start university studies in English.
I want this certification to be "good" but also willis mostly to get a job in a gym until I am graduated university. I am so sick of my job right now, I need to do something about it.
Anyone have any advice to give?

I know Can-Fit is super popular around my area, nearly everyone and their dog has it....

Is can-fit going to get me a job in a gym? I am planning on taking all the online course. I would rather clean dumbbells than the damn job I have right now. I understand that I am a student, still learning English but filling shelves in a pharmacy is a very dumb job.
i am trying their Advanced Exercise Nutrition, Version 1.1 its only 80$, If I like it I will try more course, if not that is not a big loss.

all the ppl with it here are all working as either full time/part time trainers so it must be reputable..I'm looking into taking it myself, as a job filler...and yes it seems quite affordable also

is it good?
It is very informative on ALL types and yes it's up to date with a lot of dieting info. Even has a section on dieting for the athlete which is different than the regular / normal person trying to lose weight or get healthy.
I thought it was worth the price for sure. Plus you get a diploma out of it , not just a cert.
I was able to knock it off in 2 months ( online ) because I do night shift and have lots of time to work on it. They also send out the hard copy via mail , but by the time I got that I was already done it. Ended up with 91 % and still go back to it for some great reference . I'm the type of person that can NOT read things once or even twice and remember it well enough to describe it . I have to go back and re-read 4 or 5 times to make it stick.

can you elaborate more on this please?

CanFit is owned by Goodlife. That being said, if you get CanFit I'm certain Goodlife will hire you.

exactly, I know a hand full of people that have the CanFit and I wouldnt ask them training advice if my life depended on it.
what does everyone think of the ICS training ?
can you elaborate more on this please?
What more do you want to know ?. The cost $770 and it's a diploma ( College Course ). I have not applied for a job because I will be doing this on my own , but I can't see any place NOT taking this , IMO it's one of the best all round courses out there. You can always specialize in something later on if that's what you want to do.
Here is the course outline.
Module 1
- Learning Strategies (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/147008.pdf)
- Intro To Managing Pers. Health (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094035.pdf)
Module 2
-Muscles In Motion (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094036.pdf)
-Exercise and How it Effects the Body
-Injury Prevention & 1St Aid (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094038.pdf)
Bonus - Supplements ( no test )
Module 3
-Nutrition & General Health (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094039.pdf)
-Nutrition & General Health (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094040.pdf)
-Sports Nutrition Textbook (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094041.pdf)
Module 4
Promoting Lifestyle Changes (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094042.pdf)
Stress Management & Reduction (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094043.pdf)
Module 5
Designing A Fitness Program (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094044.pdf)
Movement Repertoire For Class (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094045.pdf)
Exercise, Testing & Evaluation (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094046.pdf)
Module 6
The Fitness Leader In Class (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094047.pdf)
Business Skills For Fitness (http://lessons.pennfoster.com/pdf/094048.pdf)
As you can see the last Module basically takes you through the steps of becoming a fitness leader / trainer and teaches you how to get your business up and running and your options.
There is a test after each study unit so your total amount of tests are 15 .
A few reasons I did go with this course is because of the different topics it covers ( from kids to elderly , athlete to plain Jane , re-hab to prevention , pre/post workout , nutrition....so much.
Also you can make monthly payments of whatever you want ( this is what I did ) or make lump sums or all at once , however you want to pay for it , very flexible.
Hope that helps.
i would go with a larger recognized cert.....even if its a retard ACE.....here's my list of certs and their ranking
5. your provincial cert (in bc its the bcrpa..its garbage but you'll get a job at a rec centre of crap fitness centre no problemo)
4.ACE (its a piece of crap but better than the provincial ones they offer)
3.NSCA ( this is the hardest one imo...and you need previous education ie a degree)
2. ISSA (i like this one the most...you dont need a degree and its very good)
1.NASM top o the line here boys....they offer full degrees and even masters program....best of the best.....after this one you'd be a university or sports team strength coach if you like.....
there are other cert programs..these are just the ones i know about....

I made a thread on this a while back. The most helpful post I received was from Tribe
You can get a job as a trainer in a commercial gym with just a Canadian cert (CanFit or CPTN) or US cert (ACE, ISSA, etc.). You'll just have the very basics if you have no other education or experience other than these weekend courses. The rest of your education will likely come from self study (internet, books) or working with an educated and experienced trainer. You can attain higher quality and more repected certs by persuing a CSCS, ACSM, NASM (some require a degree though) or RTS.
To make money in the business you need to know how to train AND how to market/sell your services. I've seen many technically sound trainers waste away simply because they had no business/sales savvy. It's unfortuneate that many successful (in terms of income) trainers exist with no ability to make they're clients better - any monkey can put a beating on their client.
^^ good info! you see this all too often in gyms....trainers with no real skill or knowledge....but they can sure talk a good game to ppl that know nothing......
I really dont know which one I want to do, ICS, ISSA or NASM. The NASM CPT look very interesting. NASM does not really do the nutrition part.
Would you guys do

ICS
or

NASM
I really cannot make up my mind.

I would say NASM
I did a search and found a bunch of reviews on ICS, and i would say 90% of the reviews are negative. there directed to the school in general. but the reviews are enough to make you wanna stay away.

even Can-Fit Pro seems ok as there are a fair amount of trainers in my gym with it working quite steady :)

NASM have 3 programs
Certified Personal Trainer (CPT)
Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES)
Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES)
but you ave to do the test in some US city
Its really blowing my mind all the certification stuff.. I might have to do Can fit pro just because I can do it here in calgary.
Seems NASM is in the state only, I will now have to pick between ICS & can fit pro.
issa is great...its all online or thru the mail...check it out....

Memo I'm going to go for my Canfit Pro. Look at it this way your just getting started in the industry. You need to make a name for yourself and get some client experience anyway. I'm going to go for my Canfit Pro then see how things go then I might hit up some of the more advanced courses at a later date. But with CFP you will be able to find a job in most local gyms

Yeah I think its what I should do. ISSA looks alright but I just dont feel it for some reason. It has such a bad reputation from what I hear.
