Time to switch doctors?

I've been seeing a psychiatrist for about 7 years now. I have to see one because I have a neurological disorder and he prescribes my medication. I saw him yesterday and he said he believes that I am sociopath. He gave me these reasons.

I have lack understanding of others emotions and in most cases don't care what happens to others. That in my day to day dealings with people I'm manipulative and rarely care about the consequences. I rarely show guilt or remorse unless I believe some harm will come to me from my actions. I have an emphasis on material things. I have obsession with looks, as well as an obsession with others perceiving me as being a superior being to them (I think he's getting this because I'm bodybuilding). I'm very impulsive and impatient. I lack all responsibility.

He then told me the medication he's being giving me is an anti-psychotic mood stabilizer and that he thinks it's been working well.

Aren't sociopaths nut cases? I certainly don't want to be lumped into this category. I could always switch doctors as this guy is really old anyway and is semi-retired. Eventually I will be seeing a new doctor anyway.

He asked me if I saw someone drunk fall over if I'd help them up? I said I'd laugh because drunken injuries are self inflicted.

He asked if someone had some weight on top of them what would I do? I said I'd get them off of them because I would want someone to do the same for me. He thought that was selfish.

Get another opinion....old pricks are gereraly not current on mental health issues, drugs, or drug interactions. And for the most part most shrinks have issues themselves....I don't have enough fingers to count how many ""f'n crazy''' women I've dated that were taking Phychology!!

This doctor also has a ****ing hatred for bodybuilding. I had a bodybuilding mag with me once when I was in his office because the wait is pretty long and he was going off for a few minutes on how looking at the cover disgusted him.

That's what I'm getting at Ragnar. Lots of people are dicks, does that make them all sociopaths? Having this on my medical history isn't a good thing. What if I needed a job that required they look at my history and they see that shit staring back at them. Military for example (I don't know if they check histories but you know what I'm saying).

^^^ True....questions related to stepping in when the situation is not self-inflicted are a truer test of your compassion for others.

I work with youth in a volunteer position and refuse to help them unless they have some understanding of why they messed up and that things need to change. If I was walking through town and saw one face first on the grass puking his guts out I would wave and say "Serves you right ya dumb punk." Call it heartless if you wish but some need a real dose of reality.

Completely agree here Bro. The feedback you receive is suppose to help you come to terms with the deeper origins of your problems. However, what you're getting back from this fellow doesn't seem particularly profound or helpful. Maybe, his own issues are getting in the way of a proper interaction with you?

Not so much ****ed, but there's no 'cure' for the disorder. That doesn't mean you're going to turn into a serial killer, who have all been diagnosed as psychopaths.

A good percentage of sociopaths live very productive lives without any type of legal issues, in fact many rise to the top of the business world. The primary questions to ask yourself are, do I feel guilt, remorse, and most important, empathy towards others in appropriate situations? The fact that you chose to end the communication with that person you were involved with 'without being mean' suggests that you do.

there is so many opinions out there so definately get a second opinion and don't forget how much money is changing hands in regards to doctors pushing meds on people. I feel that a great number of people are overmedicated by their doctors.

I actaully went thru 3 different Dr.'s before one found out what was wrong (broken scaphoid) and by that time it was too late to heal on its own and I had to have surgury the next day.

I think the real question is, do you have problems interacting with other people? Have you caused real harm to someone else (or yourself)? Can you keep relationships (girls, buddies etc...) - basically, can you live a life you want without hurting someone else. If you can, no worries.
