Does anyone else think this is ridiculous? What if the impact was great enough to shift the moon's orbit? Wouldn't that have an immense adverse affect on Earth? Maybe they thought of that.. they are scientists after all, but aside from that, seems like a HUGE waste of money and resources.

"what if the impact was great enough to shift the moon's orbit"...

Yes, I am sure they thought of that - although they probably didn't have to think of that considering what really would need to be done to the moon to shift its orbit and then have adverse effects to the earth. Not something this little mission could have done.

As a space buff i think this is an awesome experiment. Slamming a couple of satellites into the moon is kind of like throwing a tennis ball at an apartment building. Im sure if there was even a .0001% chance of this harming the earth the government would have nuked this project so fast it would have made NASA's head spin.

no way in hell an empty space hull is even remotely close to an asteroid impact

interesting experiment, but not sure why they give a ****. If there is water, there might be micro-organisms. Probably not something we want to bring back to earth

Which is why any and all extraterrestrial material brought back is placed in quarantine until Nasa is 110% sure that there are no micro-organisms. A single alien bacteria has the potential to whip out all life on earth. Its scary shit.

There are large asteroids and space junk that hit the moon all the time, this is minor in comparison...They want to see how much h2o is in the surface of moon and what quality etc....possibly a dock zone for space travel later rather than coming back to earth.....
OR SO THEY SAY>>>>>>muahahaha

It's actually not as bad as I thought it was. I had read earlier articles about the project that described the satellite as a "missile". Obviously those people had the wrong information. I watched the NASA video feed of the impact.. pretty minor in comparison to a meteor impact.

Did they release their results? I havent followed it since seeing the news this morning. Did they find any water molecules?

The people discovery channel were talking to said they would have the results in as quick as 15 minutes after impact... My guess now is they found nothing so they need a excuse to why there was nothing there and spent all this money. lol

If there's water, it makes the construction and upkeep of their space station even more affordable, which opens the way to gathering resources on the moon. Rare expensive metals on Earth might not be so rare on the moon. Plus the whole space travel thing.

As for the impact, the moon is already getting away, so it couldn't possibly result in a collision
