View Full Version : Quit Smoking Meds...Work?

I have an appointment with my Doc next week to get some blood work back (long going battle to try to get me on TRT/HRT). At the same time I was thinking of asking her about quit smoking meds.

I have smoked for about 15year…never heavy but still a shitty habit. In all honesty I don’t find it effects me negatively …still workout like mad…and have always been a cardio addict.

But the days of smoking being cool are long gone. Last week I started talking to a hot piece of ass that just started in my office. Everything was going great till I brought up the fact I was craving a smoke…funny now it seems the majority of chicks that smoke are white trash, dirties and fatties.

Anyone here use stuff like Champix or Zyban? Or even know people who have used it with success? Is it worth it or should I just try going cold turkey for the 12th time?

There was a time when that wasn't the majority?

I don't know what to say because it was the easiest thing I ever did. Smoked a pack a day from age 15-27. Just stopped buying them and never craved them again.

lol@ 12th time!!! I only crave when I have a couple drinks to be honest, but I did quit cold turkey 4 times :) and have never looked back since the last one way back in Aug of 09! I do only have the odd 1 now though when I have a few sips seriously!

i smoked for 11 years and i quit with 1 pack of nicotine gum. buuuut my brother smoked for a few years longer and he couldnt quit no matter what.....the doc gave him a script for chantix and he quit no problem with no sides! zyban is just wellbutrin (antidepressant) so id stay away...chantix seems to be the new wonder drug in nicotine cessation!!

I found the zyban did help the withdrawal significantly but as was said above it's an antidepressant and I found that I didn't llike the way it made me feel so dropped it after about 6 weeks.

At the end of the day quitting smoking is about deciding you are going to quit. It's not easy. The first few months of physical withdrawal are annoying and it takes a few years for the mental addiction to die off. Tobacco rewires your brain pretty effectively.

[QUOTE=cheesesteak;273174]There was a time when that wasn't the majority?

Valid point on white trash, dirties and fatties, some things never change.

Its a pointless and dirty habit and for that reason I need to quit....I am hoping some meds can help me out a bit.

In the past it was always excuses like: only have a few while on campus (exam time), going out for drinks, in the car, after sex ......as a good smoker you can come up with a shitload of excuses that ends up being half a pack a day plus.

The good thing is my social scene has change a lot over the last year or two with my new career. Most of the people I socialize with now are non smokers and being stuck in an office all day keeps me from smoking. Drinking nights are becoming more and more rare also.

Thinking this is the perfect time to quit....and hope the meds give me that edge.

Plus last time I was at the docs she was trying to use my smoking as ANOTHER reason of why I should not be going on TRT.

Zyban worked wonders but I ended up in the hospital with horrible cramps. I couldn't even walk they were so bad. They went away the following day and it's part of the side effects. Besides that i give it two thumbs up !

quiting is easy, i do it 3 or 4 times a month..

i always seem to find a reason to light another one. i am not a person to take pills unless i have to so the only excuse i have is i haven't really wanted to. i have decided that next time i give it a real try i am going to have to make some major changes first. i know i will have to avoid a few of my friends and a lot of the places i hang out, i will have to find a few different things to do at work etc so i don't find myself in the situations where it will bother me etc.

I used zyban before and had to stop a short time into it. Made me feel like crap. I couldnt sleep and when I did fall asleep I had crazy nightmares, night sweats, no fun at all. I just stopped the pills and still quit smoking. I have since started again and am planning to quit again here, as many times as it takes right?

I think that the more you really want to quit the easier it is with or without help. If there is the slightest part of you that dont want to quit, you will find a way not too.

Good for you bro!!! I like it that you left that behind you.

I smoked VERY lightly in my mid 20s--a pack of Dumorriers ULTRA light LMFAo would last me a months time.

NOW a days, I will have one here and there, but mainly when I drink a lot (which does not happen too often) or when I do "other stuff" :(
I only ever smoked greens around 10 times in my entire life :) I hate the stuff!!
