View Full Version : What does everyone Dumbell Curl?

HoliTheCat

Single arm.

I am asking because of Canadian Irons thread. I noticed a lot of people were throwing around 30 and 35lbs and such.

That seems ridiculously low to me...70 is a great curl...but you cannot tell me other brothers on this board cannot do that?

When I used to train arms consistently I could do 65s and 70s for reps...and I bet even now I could walk into the gym tomorrow and curl 50s or 55s for some reps...and I haven't trained arms directly for over 2 years...

This is not set up to brag or boast by any means...as 50s are not impressive in the slightest (i don't think).

But the amount of skepticism for a guy who claims curling 70s was absurd. One brother even ate boxers!!

This is a bodybuilding forum (usually). I hope everyone of you ****en guys can curl more then 30 or 35lbs.

And if there are any brothers on here who sauce...and cannot curl 35lbs...this is what we should be eating boxer shorts over...lol

So anyways...whats an average curl? I am curious.

Thanks.

I work with the 50s, or 55s.

Heavy days 60s to 65s..I never go passed what is needed in order to rip the muscle.

I could probably have gone higher but I only had dumbells till 95lbs at that point. It was a home gym.

Oh and this was about 6 months after I recouped from an elbow injury that put me out for 3 months. I had restarted back with a 3lbs dumbell curl.

I trained Max-OT style during that period. Very good for strength imo.

by going that heavy MP did you actually notice that much in growth as opposed to a lighter weight per say?

kloan
06-10-2009, 09:41 PM
I'm working with 45's for now because I'm dieting (strength is a little lower). I've been doing 12/10/8 with that.

Before dieting I was working with 50's, good form.. not swinging to get the weight up (like some people I see). I might cheat to get a couple more reps out though... I know, not very impressive.. but I'm not a very big guy (yet :D).. it's only been 1.5 years for me.

I wish I could go higher, but every time I try to my forearms (inside the outer bone) hurt way too much.

im not gonna lie.. CI thread made me try 70's.. i could do them no problem i think 8 or 9 reps or something, BUT i didnt like the feel , i felt like my form wasent solid enough, and was swinging too much.. i use 60's as my working sets.. i can do them very very strict.. im very picky on my form on all my lifts

i dont curl anymore as its kinda useless in my program but last time was about 6 months ago and i was using the 80's and getting 8-10 rest paused....seated alt db curls i was getting the 70's up for 5.....

by going that heavy MP did you actually notice that much in growth as opposed to a lighter weight per say?

I noticed a denser and harder muscle when I was going very heavy on my lifts. I was able to maintain it for about 2 years before my joints started giving me problems. Especially the knees. I used to squat always over 500lbs and leg press over 1000. The problem after is my joints started to lock up and ache bad. But I loved the muscle density and explosive power I had. Not good in the long run for the joints though and my muscles were so tight I actually pulled my back sitting down.

What kept me going for 2 years is that every 8 weeks, I used to take a full week off from training. I was actually stronger on some lifts when I started after the week off

On very heavy lifts, you will somewhat cheat to get to the point you will develop the strength to go stricter. Some exercises you can't cheat though. One was the behind the neck press, impossible to cheat on form when you go heavy as you risk a major injury.

Dumbell curls it is easy to cheat without that much of an injury risk. I was training alone in my basement so it wasn't an ego thing as no one saw me (well my wife did but most of the time I was alone). I used slight cheating to increase my strength slowly until I could handle the 95lbs with strict form. The goal was to concentrate on being strict yet not stop if I would cheat a little. But if it becomes like rowing a boat, there isn't a point anymore.

exactly my same reasons for no longer going for max weight full time anymore (sore joints etc) I just started to realize actually that I can't go all out anymore because of my full time max lifting mentality in the past!! I was always going stupid heavy for all my yrs since day one......starting to change my ways now though and just every so often go stupid with the weight ;) :bch

yesterday I curled 85's for 5 reps, shit form however after doing that I'm able to squeeze out much cleaner reps with 75's.

The main reason I do curls is because I can't barbel or ez bar curl without brutal forearm pain, I usually do strict concentration curls near the end of my bi workout and I use 50's.

Arm day 1 BB Curl 5 sets work up to 155 for 10.
then i do seated or concentration curls, spider curls or machine curls to finish off bi's, then tris

3 days later

Arm day 2 DB curl 4 sets work up to 90s for 12.
then hammer curls or concentration, then rope curls or machine. then calves

some body english on the heaviest sets, controlled and squeezed on peakouts as much as i possibly can

Last time I used the 35s and got 9+4+3 rest pause, so I guess today it's finally time to try the 40s. I am 5'7 155 lb, training for just over a year but never really focused on biceps until a couple months ago since I was doing the Starting Strength program for a while. I do them both arms at the same time on a seat with a back so I can't use any swinging momentum.

I've noticed there are 2 ways gym's list their weights. 1 list the weight attached to the bar but does not include the bar or fasteners. The others include the weight of the bar and hardware. Mine is the first type, and I've done the 65's for reps which is really closer to 70. My regular workout is 55's though

This is true... the gyms that have the rubber coated weights generally list them to their actual weight... the gyms with the steel weights usually list the weight on the rack and they're 6-7lbs off for the grip, washers and bolts.

Danger

Every gym I've been to has olympic bars.

- Bench bars weigh 45lbs
- EZ Curl bars weigh 25lbs
- fasteners, what a couple oz?? trivial...

Everything else is the weight that's stated. I've never seen empty DB handles in a gym.

You could always place the dumbell on a scale to see exactly what it weighs.

This is what I did.

Usually the bar through the barbell is solid steel.. concidering the length and girth, 6lbs makes sense (thats what she said) . Yes I weighed a "65lb" dumbell and it was 72lbs.

kloan

Your scale is probably off....

ironwill
15-10-2009, 01:04 PM
steel weighs 5 lbs per 1 foot square and one eighth inch thick....
so if the bar is say one inch diameter, take pie r squared to get the surface area and then take it over however many inches long the bar is and then convert it back to square inches and then figure it out from there...or if you have a scale, that works as well....:a+:popc2

True, big curls dont always=big bis. When my arms were there largest, around the 20" mark, I would rarely curl over 50-55lbs even though I had gone to 85 in the past. Shit I would only preacher curl 60lb barbell.

That's not too shabby CI.If one relies on the theory that you cannnot shape the biceps muscle, that a curl is a curl, some might feel there should be a correlation between say,a standing barbell curl in good style, and let's say cable preacher curls. But I don't believe this to be true.
