I've used rack deadlifts a couple times to overload the back and take the quads/glutes/hams out of the equation. I'm not so sure that they are a good replacement for a full traditional deadlift, but I can up the weight quite a bit for a direct hit on the erectors. I usually do traditionals BTW. I also started doing some sumo lifts. I find that these are a little awkward but when done correctly give my a killer burn from the lumbar right up to center back. I always use straps and never use hockey grip. Just wondering what the boys around here have to say about these 3 variations of the deadlift and how it may have worked or not for them. Post away!

I use conventional and I also do rack pulls, when I do a sumo pull it always seems more like a squat than a deadlift in terms of muscles used.

I like traditional, in a rack or on a smith-machine....

I have yet to try sumo but both rack pulls and deadlifts are in my current rotation.

I agree with C, use all styles... for bodybuilding purposes, the more variety the better.

When you guys do rack, how far down do you lift from or do you vary it from height to height?

I like to do mine from just under the knee, I find it really takes my legs out and makes my back really work. They deffinatly have helped my reg deadlift.

I have always been doing deadlifts starting from the ground and the first one is always a bitch to do and it takes alot out of me. I pull 4 plates but I am just beat after that initial one. I have never done any other ones. How do they work and are they as good for you as the ones from the ground?
