Report: Entertainers in steroid report
ALBANY, N.Y. - A number of entertainers were named in connection with an Albany-based steroid investigation, but they are not part of an ongoing criminal probe, according to a published report.
The Times Union of Albany cited unidentified law enforcement officials in reporting Sunday that R&B music star Mary J. Blige, rap musicians 50 Cent, Timbaland and Wyclef Jean, and award-winning author and producer Tyler Perry may have received or used performance-enhancing drugs.
Law enforcement officials have said evidence does not indicate that the celebrities broke the law, but that investigators are focusing on doctors, pharmacists and clinics that provide the drugs.
Albany District Attorney P. David Soares launched the investigation into steroid trafficking last year.
Soares is "not confirming, denying or discussing any of the names" involved in the investigation, said spokeswoman Heather Streeter Orth.
A spokeswoman for Blige denied the singer had taken illegal steroids.
Ken Sunshine, a spokesman for Perry, declined to comment.
There was no response to calls Sunday and Monday seeking comment from representatives of other entertainers.
While athletes use steroids and human growth hormone to get bigger, faster and stronger, the drugs can also lure other people with their supposed anti-aging qualities.
Soares' multistate investigation has focused on Signature Pharmacy of Orlando, Fla. So far, 10 defendants have pleaded guilty and news reports have linked some professional athletes to Soares' probe.
Soares has said Signature was at the center of a web of businesses and doctors that illegally wrote prescriptions for steroids. Authorities raided the company almost a year ago and its owners and operators are awaiting trial in Albany on related charges.
Records shared with the Times Union and information from several cooperating witnesses on Long Island allege the celebrities received prescribed human growth hormone or steroids, the newspaper said.
The newspaper said that Blige received the human growth hormone Jentropin and Oxandrolone, an anabolic steroid, in orders sent to her at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Her spokeswoman denounced the report. "Mary J. Blige has never taken any performance enhancing illegal steroids," Karynne Tencer told the Daily News.
Former Sen. George Mitchell released a report last month on performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. That report said former Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski provided steroids and human growth hormone linked to several prominent players. Radomski pleaded guilty last year to charges that he dealt steroids to players for a decade.
Congressional hearings are to begin this month on the Mitchell report.

If only someone high profile would come forward and say, Hell Yeah, I took steroids and growth hormone. It made me look and feel younger and it was safely prescribed by a licenced physician. A number of nagging injuries I had healed up and I lost bodyfat that I'd being trying for years to burn off. Wanna see my abs?

Timbaland and 50 cent wouldn't suprise... But Wyclef... isn't he a skinny dude? Could mean he just started I guess. You know who is on steroids guaranteed in the rap business, Dr. Dre - that dude went from overweight with no build to looking like he could jump on stage in less then 3 years or something.

What ever happened to the notion of law that personal freedom included the right to do whatever you wished as long as it didn't affect your fellow man? It seems to me the law is 1) confusing AAS with narcotics, and
2) confusing what's fair in sports with what the law should be concerned with.

I'm telling you. It's a modern day witch hunt. They don't kill you like they did the witches but they ruin your life pretty good.
I am not one to get angry often or feel biased toward things, but this whole persecution of people who use AAS and ruining their lives is starting to make me feel like the real bad people are those who are doing the persecuting and ruining the others life. It's one thing to make a living off selling them but it's WAY, WAY different than buying and taking them. I will judge them as they judge others. They are criminals in my eyes for destroying anothers life in the name of what is "right" in a man made law.
These are self-righteous people full of anger and hate trying to "punish" the evil doers to give themselves purpose in their life. Sad, it's just so sad.

First of all people need to understand that it's niot only bodybuilders or trained athletes who take steroids. For example, most people who take testosterone and HGH as a form of HRT are not really bodybuilders. They are just regulra people who might exercise here and there and they just take steroids to feel rejuvinated and have more energy. Celebs habe always been big into testosterone and HGH and it's been a secret for many of the aging celebls. My endo has told me over and over again that most men in Holywood over 70 are on HRT, but don;t talk about it. JFK also took testosterone for years, but he didn't look like a bodybuilder. many fat overweight politicians take testosterone and they still look like shit. HRT is basically for rejuvination and more energy and that's the main reason it was created. It was never meant for bodybuilding. So it's not surprising at all when you hear celebs who barelly work out taking test and HGH which they find helps with their energy and recovery especially being on the road year round.

I just find the hypocrisy interesting. Like officials are sitting around with their list of names thinking.."Hmm, she's too popular...he's too popular...nah, we can get him...uh, yeah let's get him". Interesting too when they ignore the end user and go after the doctor(s) who prescribed them. Of course, it's because they're the real villain in the story .
"Let's go out and protect our youth from those rich people who are acquiring steroids but who aren't going to go out robbing a bank for their next fix! When we get the steroids off the street and out of our nation, then we'll all feel a little safer. Then our kids can safely go down to the corner and enjoy some refreshing crack!"

Then they say his name and I was like wtf! where did he get his gear, I want some! You would figure it would be hard for a rapper to that big considering the lifestyle most of them live and all the temptations that come with it.

Hey, I'm sure you're going to love this little study..
Recreational Drugs FAR Less Likely to Kill You than Prescribed Drugs!
By Christopher Kent, D.C., J.D.
Recreational drugs, including cocaine and heroin, are responsible for an estimated 10,000-20,000 American deaths per year [1,2]. While this represents a serious public health problem, it is a "smokescreen" for America's real drug problem. America's "war on drugs" is directed at the wrong enemy. It is obvious that interdiction, stiff mandatory sentences, and more vigorous enforcement of drug laws have failed.
The reason is simple. Cause and effect have been reversed.
The desire to solve problems by taking drugs is a product of our culture. When a child is taught by loving parents that the appropriate response to pain or discomfort is taking a pill, it is obvious that such a child, when faced with the challenges of adolescence, will seek comfort by taking drugs.
Drugs are Dangerous Whether Pushed or Prescribed
While approximately 10,000 per year die from the effects of illegal drugs, an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that an estimated 106,000 hospitalized patients die each year from drugs which, by medical standards, are properly prescribed and properly administered. More than two million suffer serious side effects. [3]
An article in Newsweek [4] put this into perspective. Adverse drug reactions, from "properly" prescribed drugs, are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. According to this article, only heart disease, cancer, and stroke kill more Americans than drugs prescribed by medical doctors. Reactions to prescription drugs kill more than twice as many Americans as HIV/AIDS or suicide. Fewer die from accidents or diabetes than adverse drug reactions. It is important to point out the limitations of this study. It did not include outpatients, cases of malpractice, or instances where the drugs were not taken as directed.
According to another AMA publication, drug related "problems" kill as many as 198,815 people, put 8.8 million in hospitals, and account for up to 28% of hospital admissions. [5] If these figures are accurate, only cancer and heart disease kill more patients than drugs. Has the situation improved since the publication of this information? Hardly. Null [6] et al have published the most comprehensive and well-documented study I have seen of deaths associated with medical practice. In this report, their research revealed some shocking facts. The findings are summarized in the abstract:
"A definitive review and close reading of medical peer-review journals, and government health statistics shows that American medicine frequently causes more harm than good. The number of people having in-hospital, adverse drug reactions (ADR) to prescribed medicine is 2.2 million. Dr. Richard Besser, of the CDC, in 1995, said the number of unnecessary antibiotics prescribed annually for viral infections was 20 million. Dr. Besser, in 2003, now refers to tens of millions of unnecessary antibiotics.
The number of unnecessary medical and surgical procedures performed annually is 7.5 million. The number of people exposed to unnecessary hospitalization annually is 8.9 million. The total number of iatrogenic deaths shown in the following table is 783,936. It is evident that the American medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the United States. The 2001 heart disease annual death rate is 699,697; the annual cancer death rate, 553,251."
Drugs Number One Killer
The authors conclude: "When the number one killer in a society is the healthcare system, then, that system has no excuse except to address its own urgent shortcomings. It's a failed system in need of immediate attention. What we have outlined in this paper are insupportable aspects of our contemporary medical system that need to be changed -- beginning at its very foundations."
A recent article in Archives of Internal Medicine [7] stated that in the seven year period from 1998 through 2005, reported serious adverse drug events increased 2.6-fold, and fatal adverse drug events increased 2.7-fold. The authors noted that reported serious events increased 4 times faster than the total number of outpatient prescriptions during the period. Another study concluded that the majority(86%) of the adverse drug reactions for which patients were admitted to a medical intensive care unit were preventable. [8]
One proposed solution to the illegal drug problem was encouraging potential users to ignore peer pressure and "just say no." Interestingly, this strategy is not being recommended for prescription drugs. Bruce Pomeranz, MD , one of the authors of the JAMA paper, said he is not warning people to stay away from drugs. "That would be a terrible message," he said. Lucian Leape, MD, of the Harvard School of Public Health said, "When you realize how many drugs we use, maybe those numbers aren't so bad after all." [4]
Does that mean that the number of deaths due to illegal drugs, suicide, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, accidents, and drunk driving "aren't so bad" either? Does it mean that we shouldn't discourage drunk driving or unsafe sex?
The folly of such double standards should be obvious to all. It is time to address the real drug problem -- the cultural notion that the first solution to seek for relief of life's problems is a drug. That's the drug culture we need to address.

OK that post that was posted above is retarded on several levels and I hope you posted it in sarcasm:
1) are you implying that steroids and rec drugs are on the same level? If you agree, go away
2) well of course prescribed drugs are going to cause more TOTAL complications than narcs. It's because they're way more used than narcs. It doesn't make narcs better. What's the percentage of users exhibiting complications?

What I meant by putting that post is up, its that it pisses me off to see the governement going on a witch hunt (Because steroids are supposed to be so dangerous...) When on the other side, tons of people are dying because of prescribed medication. Doesn't make sense.

the fact that prescription drugs keep more ppl alive then kill really does put the discussion to an end.
