View Full Version : Dealing with a pawn shop
So i found a ring (yes, actually found, i didnt steal it haha) just lying on the ground randomly outside some gas station..anyway, at first im like, whatever its probably some fake cheap immitation ring.
anyway i took a look at it, and inside the band it said 18 Karot Gold, and also if the diamond on it is real, its a HUGE diamond.
Anyway point is, im taking this thing to a pawn shop, obviously their gonna try and get it off me as low possible, how do i avoid getting ripped off here and getting a decent amount of money, and also how do i do this without knowing its actual value.

Do you have any local owned jewellery stores in your city? Not big chain stores. Go there and ask the guy how much he thinks it's worth. Then you know where you stand at the pawn shop.

Get it appraised. You may be able to get more on ebay, kijiji or craigslist. If you get it appraised, make sure you get the paperwork. Usually if the rock is big, it's either lower quality or a zirconium.

why don't you look in the lost and found in your local paper and see if someone lost it and is offerring a reward..I would feel better personally returning it to the rightful person instead of thinking of fast cash...You might make someones day by returng it..GOOD KARMA BRO

i agree that ring probably has way more value to the person that lost it than you do.not trying to be a dick but if it it was you that lost it or your wife ,mom what would you be thinking right now.time to man up.thats why we work right to make money.

Ill put a thing on craigslist but other then that there is nothing much else i can do. i know exactly how it will go.
"Who lost a ring, 18k gold, full of diamonds, call ***-**** to claim"
-I get 3828 calls of people trying to luckily describe the ring and get it as theres
-i get more calls of more fakes
-the actual owner calls, but by then im just ignoring calls because my phones been ringing all day
-More fake calls
-Tren rage and break phone and punch nearest wall
-phone actually didnt break and rings again
-change number, file for insanity
-game over.
OR..
-sell ring
-profit.
which to choose haha
dont get me wrong, i am putting an ad up, but other then that what left am i reponsible to do? chances of finding the owner in a city of over a million is pretty slim, especially having to sort through the 300 fake calls ill be getting

you do what you think is right if you did place a lost and found ad you don't have to describe the ring just give a idea where it was found and you can also call the police to report that you found it.i'm a strong believer in karma... put your self in this persons shoes...and please believe me when i say i'm not trying to be a dick i think you are a good person.

I dont think you'll ever find the true owner unfortunately. Just too many people out there trying to make a buck. You could always trying asking the gas attendant and see if anyone has come back asking if they found a ring. Most likely if they did they left their number with him. Then get that person to describe it.

Returning it might be more of a hassle than you expect people are assholes these days, I found some guys cell phone walking me dog flip it open call the number listed as home and tell the guy I have his phone. He then asks me if I can swing by his place and return it (WTF?) Im like nah but you can come pick it up tho, he then asks if I can meet him half way to his house, seriously WTF! 3 hours later at like 11:30 the jackass shows up and bangs on the door like someone is dying grabs the phone flips it open checks it and walks away without saying thanks or anything. I felt like kicking the dudes ass.
Last month I found a purse on bus stop bench again walking my dog, has cash and id in it but the address is hella far away so I take it to the police station so they can make sure it gets returned the **** bitch cop at the desk hassles me like I stole the damn thing and trys to get my ID and shit...
I just dont get it, you try and do something to help somebody out and this sorta shit happens....

Like I said before go to the gas station ask if anyone lost a ring, or has been by to leave a number. If yes get the number if no, go get it appraised and sell it. But doesnt seem like you really want to return it...

only sometimes bro, my dad found a phone while going for a run and he wasn't able to call the paper to put an add in the lost and found until a month later (he went outta town), anyhow a girl called and came to the house to claim it. She described the phone and the serial number. So my dad gave it to her, she was so thankful, she offerred my dad money and my dad was like "whats this for?" she goes, "a reward for the phone!", Dad: "save it for school"....
I would take it to the police station theres a chance that the ring could be worth 40grand. Im only saying that because my buddy just got married and bought his wife (now) an engagement ring that set him back 35 grand, I only believed it because I was with him when he purchased it.
Give me the ring and I will propose to your mom with it.
That way you keep it in the family and everyone wins :)

If nobody claims you can sell it but I suggest you do something wise with the money like donate to the women's shelter. Xmas is coming so nothing better than buying some little kids toys to make their life better.
Ain't standard procedure to turn the item over to the po po and if nobody claims the ring it becomes yours?

At least make an attempt to return it to the rightful owner. If nothing happens at least you tried. Do the right thing and don't be greedy.

Post a found ad, dont describe the ring in anyway or where you found it.
Just tell people you found a ring in your town, let them contact you through the craigslist email system and require a list of places where the "loser" may have left it and a detailed description of the ring.
If no one contacts you, the owner of the ring is probably too dumb to use technology to find their lost item and you can happily and honestly sell it knowing you "tried"... if you just give it out to the first person that calls it theirs, they will sell it and you're the idiot.

How large would you describe the largest diamond to be? (if they even are diamonds) odds are the diamond would be worth way more than the gold.
+1 for trying to find the rightful owner, but it's unlikely you will so enjoy!

took it to the diamond exchange just for the hell of it since they appraise it for free anyway.
diamonds ended up being fake, if real they would be valued about a grand that they would pay.
the gold meltdown is a payout of 190 bucks.
so if i were to sell id only get 190 bucks out of it,ill give seee if someone calls soon. if not whatever, an extra couple hund. Cant see anyone missin it to much anyway

Imagine if the wife had no clue the diamond was fake.
That would almost be as bad as when "fathers" want to donate their kidney to their "children" only to find out the bitch cheated on him and the kid aint his.
