Well at my gym the leg extention machine only holds 5-45lb plates and im wanting to go higher, but how can i do this?

I warm up with 2 plates, then do a few sets with 4 and a few more with 5 plates, but i know i can do another 45-60 pounds for my max?

What can i do here cause i really want to get my quads to grow.

Thanks.

1) Leg extension aren't going to grow your legs.
2) Squat

I would just do your heavy squats then use the leg extensions to burn them out after words

If your looking mainly to target quads consider front squats, I personally like extensions before squatting, just a few high rep low weight sets to get everything warmed up then onto the real work!

I know Tom Platz would definately argue you on this one.

I've crushed all the weights on our leg extension, had to start over with one legged extensions.

I'm pretty sure all leg work what ever it may be will ultimately result in growth :)

That's what im doing now....lol

Do both legs till i max out then one leg at a time with 2-45ers. I can feel the burn in the teardrop after these....OUCH

I think both Hatfield and Platz would tell you to shut up and squat.

Shit yours is plate loaded eh. Mine is pinned machine. A couple differnt variations of it for all angles. Stack goes up to 3 bills. Enough for me i prefer a moderate weight on this bout 2-220 for a nice controlled squeeze and good pump. Great warm up then off to front squats till i throw up.

Try doing them at the end of your workout.

Ok so squat till im dead then do extentions and ham curls till im in the ground?

I like to kill my quads/hams on leg day, but you think i should keep going till failure or stick to a # of sets......say 70-80% of failure?

Thanks.

stay with compound movements for mass and girth
squats, fronts squats, hack squats, deadlifts. these are vital in mass growth

failure and mix your leg routines up. negatives, forced reps.

Ham curls are another mostly useless exercise. Not bad but SLDL and GHD crushes them.

Back Squat, Front Squat, Leg Press, Hack Squat - leg extensions have little payback.

A bill starr 5x5 or rippetoes starting strength are both likely to give you a decent strength base. The questions your asking about sets/reps suggest you should read rippetoe's starting strength and practical programming 5 times each.

Once you have sucked a linear program dry of gains after a year or two then dc, 531, sheiko may be for you or you may find german volume training or fst are your thing.

Me I like dc this year but I can see taking on 531 or sheiko in the future. The volume/pumping thing has little appeal to me but maybe I'll change my mind when I'm stronger.

Good posts in this thread... i think i'll scrap my leg extensions and ham curls for a while and stick to the compounds...

can't fail with compounds bro, I myself then do the ext's to warm up then (puke) cool down afterwards just to make sure I can't walk!

Lunges are pretty good for burning out legs....

oh yeah you bet, I just find them to bother my knees a little more than other exorcises

**** leg extensions, squats, lunges and bulgarian split squats...for legs to grow frequency works well, train them 3x week

Why cant you fail with compounds?

you can fail with compounds, its more the nervous system failing than muscular failure. the nervous system takes longer to recover than muscles, which can lead to overtraining if your lifting 5x week

x2
After squats I superset some leg press with extension...with extensions I like to do 30 reps - 10 toes in, 10 toes neutral, 10 toes out...wicked burn and tough to finish most time...hobble to the water fountain! LOL

extension are only good for warming up the knees and getting blood flow before squatting sessions imo.. i find with the blood flow/warmup i tend to feel my quads working more while squatting...

Cause my legs respond wayyyy better to heavy weight for example 400+ pound squats, heavy ass leg presses.. going heavy on leg extentions is just asking for trouble with my knees.. soooooo i use them as a warm up

GYMBRAT
06-10-2009, 01:26 PM
no need to go heavy on ext though bro!......what I'm saying is to burn them out on ext not to go for record pounds bro...what wrong wit that?

I do agree with them being a warm up exorcise, and that is all I use them for myself but also as a burn out exorcise as well. And as I said to each their own ;)
