View Full Version : Joint pain supplements?

I have a bit of joint pain, nothing major though, some sore knees lately from hard turf, but that's about it.

Looked at the sponsor Purica.

Was wondering how many of you take a joint supplement product?
And do you take it just for joint health? Or do you take it because you have joint issues?

And is something fancy necessary, or is something like Glucosamine enough for healthy joints?

I take 3g of Omega 3s a day.
Plus 2tbsp of Udo's 3-6-9 oil.

I use those as well. On sale I can buy them for $10 at the pharm. But 4 caps a day is not much. Take at least 6 of them, 8 would be better. It takes a while for this product to work.

cissus quadrangularis I heard is also very good.

I had luck with MSM complex to fix carpal tunnel syndrome from BJJ & Lifting

It shouldn't be much of a surprise to most here the glucomasine and chonadraton - too lazy to go check out my half empty bottles - are proving to be fairly useless.

There is at least one veterinary medicine used for joint pain that does work but it's a drug not a supplement. I can't remember the name off hand.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this topic on athletic boards. In general the complaints are "My x joint hurts, a bashed, tripped, banged, tore it". This is called an injury. There is nothing unhealthy about your joint, you simply ****ed it up. This has no relationship to a degenerative disease like rheumatoid arthritis.

If you have injured yourself then the modalities are RICE and MEAT.

If you have a degenerative bones disease with chronic pain then there are pain meds and some drugs that may help slow the disease.

The supplement industry has a big focus on selling us supplements that are purported to (but don't actually) work for the latter and have little or nothing to do with the former.

IMHO it is far better to invest in some big blue ice packs and tensor bandages or sleeves, I won't be buying any more gluco-chona-cissu to add to my collection of fairy dust.

I found the standard stuff they sell in stores to be useless. Often rest and icing did a lot better.

Or maybe the adequan or allflutop route would be best. Allflutop you can get on ebay for rather cheap.

I am not saying that you are not knowledgeable, but MSM did fix my tunel carpel syndrome problem in less than 10 days, I was just about to get a surgery done, could not sleep at night.

Now when it comes back, I go on the stuff for 20 days and im fine another few month.

I doubt the effectiveness of gluco-chondron. Cissus helped some of my friend with ligaments injury from BJJ, like elbows hyper extension that would not heal quickly enough. High dose of omega3 with Cissus seems to be better to fight inflammation than ibuprofen.

I don't know anything about MSM and whether it has an anti-inflammatory effect on carpal tunnel. I do know that treating the inflammation is important but is not of itself the cure.

My 5+ year bout with carpal tunnel was only finally resolved through careful progressive stretching, ice, exercise (primarily arnis), and aggressive massage. I basically ignored it till the point of tingling and numbness before I got serious about rehab. Physical therapy was the cure. Meds, primarily anti-inflammatories were mostly useless. Of course, all carpal tunnel (tendon sheath inflammation) does not have the same cause. Mine was the result of chronic overuse and related scar build up.

EFA's fall under the heading of food in my diet rather than supplement.

I get Active release technique (ART) done on shoulders every so often. It is like WD40 for my joints

since my shoulder injury last year I have been using this daily in divided doses:

5grams glucosamine
4grams MSM
4 grams chondroitin

Granted I went through a ton of rehab as well but no more shoulder pain.

8 grams of fish oil/day and proper warm up seem to do the job for me.

I think a lot of people get joint pain and soft tissue/tightness mixed up. I'm definitely one of them.

I think for actual joint pain.. which I don't think I've ever had a problem with, the clucosamine would probably help.

But, all the things that bother me are always just tight muscles that make my joint hurt. Like, whenever I get knee pain, I just foam roll my IT bands and after a week or two, no more knee pain. For groin pain, I foam roll the inner thigh.

I haven't figured out exactly how to fix my biceps, but I've had MT's freak out about how tight all the muscles are. In these cases, I think all that really helps is ice and time, and massage with a lot of stretching.

That's just me tho.

What is MSM?
Other names: methyl sulfonyl methane

MSM (methyl sulfonyl methane) is a compound found naturally in foods such as cow's milk, meat, seafood, fruits and vegetables.

MSM is thought to work by contributing sulfur. It's found in capsule or tablet forms. MSM is also available as a cream or lotion, although evidence suggests it can't be absorbed through skin.

I got this from:
