I can only speak from my experience with Canon, as they're the only point and shoots I've owned. I've tried a few others, but wasn't impressed with any of them (including Samsung, Sony, Panasonic). I currently own an SD780.
SD780
If you want something tiny, that still takes great pics I HIGHLY recommend the Canon SD780.
I'm thoroughly impressed with mine. For a point and shoot, it's the best I've used. It also takes very nice 720p recordings. Battery life is a little weak, but getting a 2nd battery on eBay for $10 is no big deal. I got a red one.
Indoor pictures aren't super hot, but most aren't... low light situations. Outdoors, very good. Overall a great camera for the price.

SD880
If size isn't an issue (it's slightly bigger) and you don't want/need 720p videos, the SD880 is by far the best in their line of portable point n shoots. Plenty of professional reviewers recommended it as the best picture quality. I compared numerous shots between this and the SD780 and the difference, while minor, was noticeable.
