Ever get the feeling that this “economic situation” is the perfect excuse for an employer to over work you?

I’m thinking so. The company I worked for laid off 30% of our staff 6 months ago. And business has picked back up……for the past 3-4 months. However the staffing hasn’t increased. I went from being an “Account Manager” to a Marketing Manager/Account Manager/inside sales/receptionist when needed/…blah blah blah.

And that’s okay but the bitch of it is when I show up at 8:10 – 8:15 for a job the technically starts at 9 (and work through lunch), I always get the look and a snide comment about how I’m late again something like that. Not my fault that my boss has no life and works a 12 hour day. Shit, my last job I showed up 10-20 mins before shift and they were always thankful and surprised.

Anyways my point of the rant is that I think that some employers think they can work employees endlessly because of the current job market. Well im not going to be trapped in my job. Its only a matter of time. I think I shall quit next week.

Hahaha I have already emptied my desk expect 12 file folder, 1 pen, 1 pencil and 12 cans of tuna :)

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh vented, so nice.

Staff generally earn an employer money, less staff = less profit. I think everyone is dying right now.

yeah but if you get one emplyee to do the work of three or four then the employer makes more money by paying less salaries and still making the same profit, which is what the op's rant was about

Correct. especially Admin staff. they do not directly increase revenue, so they are sacked first and their duties are passed on to those who remain.

my thoughts are the more time i spend ordering toner, pens, and answering phones, the less time i can spend selling. and in turn increase revenue and get some commission.

(nice avitar btw lol)

as long as the employer finds people (eg. you) willing to work harder and cover other peoples jobs/tasks than they were required to in the beginning its harder to backtrack and say i am too busy higher more staff

I've been screwed a lot like this in a variety of jobs. Managers takes advantage of workers who have some kind of work ethic by loading 1-2x the amount of work on you. Any funny thing is, if you don't get it done, somehow you are a slacker or didn't schedule your time right. I love that shit. You can never win with this shites

It's why I hate working for others... always ungrateful and always focus on the negatives, no matter how small..

I say if you're already going to quit, tell your boss a piece of your mind. How you've been coming in early every day, working more jobs than you're paid for, and he should show you his appreciation by giving you a raise.

Worked great for me when I did that, I got laid off.

If you're quitting anyway, just start showing up just before 9am now instead of 30-45min early. When asked to do something outside of your job description, just make up some excuse as to why you can't and sound sorry that it isn't possible for you to do it. Maybe then he/they'll see the extra you've been doing and realize when you quit, maybe the next person they hire won't be as giving as you've been.
