WHITE PLAINS, New York (Reuters) - Disgraced Olympic sprinter Marion Jones was sentenced to six months in prison on Friday for lying to federal prosecutors about her steroid use.

U.S. District Court Judge Kenneth Karas imposed the sentence after Jones pleaded guilty to two charges last October, part of a stunning demise of the five-time medalist from the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Karas gave Jones six months for lying about steroid use and two months -- to run concurrently -- for a separate charge of misleading federal investigators about her knowledge of a check fraud case involving her ex-boyfriend, former 100 meters world record holder Tim Montgomery.

Jones, 32, became the biggest name in international sport to admit to using steroids with her guilty plea in October. She tearfully admitted to betraying the trust of her fans and country after years of vehemently denying she used performance enhancing drugs.

She confessed to lying to federal investigators in 2003 when she denied knowing that she took the banned substance tetrahydrogestrinone (THG), known as "the clear," before the 2000 Olympics.

As part of her plea deal, prosecutors asked the judge to sentence her to between zero and six months in prison, and defense lawyers asked for mercy because she had suffered public humiliation.

Jones has been stripped of the five track and field medals she won in Sydney, three of them gold, and all of her performances as of September 2000 have been erased from the record books.

Jones, who once pulled in millions of dollars in product endorsements, is now in financial ruin.

ask any athelete they wont admit to anything. they give the medals to next in line who didnt get caught. sports is a lottery if you beat the test you keep the prize.

Bullshit really, it's not a sentence for doing a crime persay but for lying/denying doing something illegal. There are alot of scumbags getting less time or no time at all for robbery/sexual assualt ect, a hell of alot worse than telling a lie.

I realize that perjury is taken very seriously in the U.S but c'mon, as far as I know she has no history of being involved with the law previously.

I think they are making an example of her so when others go through trial, they'll all tell the truth when asked about AAS.

The whole AAS thing feels just like a witchhunt, with a modern twist.

Worst of all is LE and a moderate % of the population think they are doing the world a good service. Something like the witch hunters of the past. Shame on these people. It's pretty sad to see an olympic caliber person being dragged through the mud that way. It's a fact that most of them do it. Just these ones got caught and being burned at the cross. Shame shame.

funny only the good one's get caught what about the guy who is last or second last he too is using aas(cuz they are all on) but he doesnt win so why talk about him, nobody give a damn about him but athletes who come in the top 5 they all suspected criminal but not the loser.
and the reason they came hard on jones cuz they wanted to send a message at the athletes who will be competing in 8 month in china to watch out:eek:

well, the world is a safer place now that such a dangerous person to society is in jail! I'm glad they are spending their money and time in getting people like her off the street instead of terrorists, rapists, murders....they don't compare to someone who cheated to run fast.....

She was an easy target for the bigwigs. I've always said, if it's easy and they'll get a slap on the back for it from their peers, they will never pass it up.

Everyone here says LE is not going after anyone using or whatever. I always said if it's easy, they'll take it. Of course if it becomes a priority they'll take it to. But hand them something easy and they'll never pass it up.

So who remembers me warning everyone about hushmail being located in canada and it was dangerous if they left a back door. The net has changed and so have the people. Most ug labs have disappeared totally off the net and were very wise to do so as eventually operation "UG NO MORE" or something like that was going to be posted in canadian papers after it went down.
