View Full Version : deadlifting stance for guys over 6'

I started out conventional but now i pull sumo and i get a lot of grief from other guys wondering why the hell i pull sumo being 6'4"......i find that when i pull conventional the hardest part of the lift is the 1st 6 inches or so but when i pull sumo i can pull anything off the ground but i'll stall right above the knees......how do you guys pull?!

I'm 6'1 and pull conventional. I've tried sumo , but it wasn't for me. However I may start learning to pull that way .

I'm 6'2", I pull conventional, I set my feet about as wide as my feet would be for a vertical jump.

I find it has to do more with your arm length to your height, not just height... if you got long arms for your height i feel conventional is a better choice... if you got short arms sumo is the way to go. I use both stances even though i got short arms.. A guy just has to mess around for a few weeks... dont try one stance once.. it takes a few sessions to get used to the technique

Well, I'm certainly not tall (5'4"), but I do both. The reason is that you never want to do judt one, because your body gets used to it and you WILL plateau.

Doing both (con for 6 weeks and sumo for 6 weeks) tricks your body and helps with sticking points. Don't worry about what others say to you...read your body. If you are stronger doing sumo for your 1 rep max, do it. Just be sure to change things up every so often.

I've 6'2 and do conventional. I just don't like the feel of Sumo at all

i think conventional is the "easier" one of the two in the sense that most people who have never done deadlift can do more conventional. However, of all the people i've helped out with deadlifts, all of them were able to surpass their conventional after just a few weeks of getting used to sumo form. Myself included.

This could be different for taller people, however I can't see why being taller would change anything...People with really long arms benefit from sumo as well - think about it, longer your arms are, less range of motion. Also, sumo = less range of motion. But again, its all about perfecting the technique. Conventional has more lower back involved, and I think there is a limit to how strong your lower back can get, but the limit is not so much in sumo where you can place more of the load on your legs.

I found that after I switched to sumo pulls i lost quite a bit of lockout power....before pulling sumo I was able to rack pull 650+ for 8-10 reps......now I am having trouble with 545 for 5.....perhaps I will cycle them through 3-4 weeks sumo and then 2 weeks of conventional or maybe just alternate every workout......I have pretty long arms....@ 6'4" I have 80" reach......

I'm 5'11 i pull both...trains different muscles so it will improve your lift whatever you pull.

Ya thats what i noticed too tex.. i can lockout anything conventional if i get it off the floor... sumo im stronger off the floor weaker on the lockout.. BTW loving the new avi :rofl

I would need to use my girlfriends car to pull 650.

I use conventional for deadlifts but sumo for squats. I am 6'3" and the problem I have is hitting my legs on the way up from time to time, just a lapse in focus I think.

another bit of info about the sumo pull. significantly less stress is put on the l4-l5 when pulling this way.....good for talls guys.....
