I plan on buying a kayak this winter and start kayaking in the spring. It looks like a lot of fun and great exercise.
I would like to join a kayaking group. I figure it's a great way to learn and a great way to meet some new people.

Anyone on the board kayak?

My mom kayaked at her sister's cottage alot this summer. She says it's fun and it's a good workout. She's also obese so take that for what it's worth. She likes it so much her and my dad are buying a set of kayaks next summer.

That's awesome, I hear lots of positive things from people who kayak. I just need to learn what kind of kayak to buy.
Not sure what brands are good and what ones are bad.
From what i understand there are a couple types of kayak's. Ocean and lake kayaks.

I guess it's time to start investigating. I don't want to buy something crappy and have to buy a new one shortly after.

paddling rocks and you get to see where you are going (vs rowing). modern kayaks are super light and take a beating. I'd love to have one for the local ponds and river.

Hey Bro, have you tried it before? if not, i would recommend renting a kayak. i have done that a few times just to make sure i love it enough to buy one. but yea, I’m right there with you, i plan on getting one myself. although i plan on buying used. ill take someone else's depreciating thank you very much.

hopefully you can hit open ocean and not just some lakes and the waves are what make it fun IMO.

I took a kayaking course when I was in BC, but I wasn't able to finish it. When I was a kid I ended upside-down in a pool with one of those blow-up water animals stuck around my waist. I almost drowned. Needless to say, I was unable to roll my kayak. :(

Love kayaking. Mike's right, if you've never kayaked before definitly go and rent for a while and try out different kayak's to see which one you like. There is difference's between each kayak and you just have to find out which one suits your needs.

It's a hell of a relaxing sport for sure. There's just endless kayaking here on the island. But like any sport, don't use it as a means of staying in shape, get in shape so you can kayak.

My family and i have done some 2 week solo trips on lake superior/french river etc (canoe though) and man thats a killer workout, especially when im with my sister and she slacks! Couple hundred pounds of canoe in 3m swells.. great time!

I used to mess around with play kayaks but the 'rapids' here at not rapids compared to out west!

Tried it for the first time this summer. I enjoyed it. It also gives you a good workout if you do it for a few hours.

I love being on Lake Superior. It is a challenge to say the least. I am biased though when it comes to Kayaks. Go Necky or go home.

Go Necky or go home.

Interesting, i've never tried Necky though they are popular here. We've tried the Delta, not bad, and Atlantis their synergy tandom and loved it!! Down in our neck of the woods these two company's are the most common. We're going to have to try out the Necky's up north Island.

I've never been in a tandem. I have a looksha its a good boat for lake superior. I should have bought a 16 footer though.
