How many people here use the proper shoes that are designed for weightlifting / olympic lifters?

The ones with the wooden heel designed specifically to aid in squats, dead lifts, snatch, clean etc.

They are quite expensive compared to a decent pair of running shoes. My trainer strongly recommended I get a pair but I am still curious how much of a benefit they offer.

Can anyone vouch for their effectiveness / comfort / advantages?

I like my squat shoes for squatting and they are great for stuff like leg press and calf raises. I also like them for powercleans. I don't snatch but would guess they would have similar advantages.

For deads I prefer chucks or better is barefoot a raised heel is no advantage in a deadlift.

Chuck allstars are cheap and will take provide you with the stability you need. The raised heel of the squat shoe will help you if you are doing the olympic lifts and working on those techniques.

Like everyone else is saying. I've only seen serious Oly lifters wearing shoes with the hard wooden heel. If you are working a lot on olympic lifts than they may be beneficial. Otherwise, chucks work great, so do wrestling boots, some guys like skateboarding shoes for certain lifts, ballet slippers even.

I wear water shoes for deadlifting and squats. They're pretty much like going barefoot (but I don't get kicked out of the gym).

I am doing most olympic lifts with my training now so I feel like they might be a good idea, but they are so expensive I wanted to get some feedback on them first.

I've got a pair of blue suede shoes from http://www.weightliftingshoes.ca/
The advantage for me was that I could try them on first before buying.

I agree that the Chinese Do-Wins offered by The Power Firm... http://www.weightliftingshoes.ca/ ... are great for any static lifting ie O-lifts, PL'ing, etc, but definitely not for plyometric and/or speed/agility work.
