What are the strange, dumb and insane things you've seen at the gym?

Mine was some guy standing on a ball doing barbell curls. I was sure he was going to go flying into the mirror but manged to get his sets done. Not too bright.

1. Some idiot doing calf raises on the Lever squat machine, like this one:
http://www.genofit.com/images/Legend/3129_Squat_Machine.jpg
And loading up 9-10 plates on the top. One time they actually fell.
What an idiot.. hope he's a member here.

2. I little guy who probably hasn't worked out much, doing 20lb dumbell curls for about 15 minutes straight. I was doing something in front of him, and didn't want to stand in front of him (in the mirror) so I waited a minute, and he kept going and going. So I said, whatever, I'll do a set. And he kept going and going. I went and got water. Then I did three more sets and he kept going and going. Honestly must have done about 300-400 curls straight on each arm.

a guy shit himself doing leg presses while wearing cut off jeans. Like a trooper though he went in the change room, got cleaned up put on a different pair of pants (back ups? who does that? lol) and came out to finish the rest of his workout.

I was grossed and impressed at the same time lol. That was back some 15 years ago at a Y back home.

Lol, I've seen a guy who did a similar thing. He was doing wrist curls with 2.5 or 5lbs for like an hour.

A guy who puts 24 plates total on leg press and changed machine cause it hurts its lower back.. so he went on the 90 degree leg press.. it isnt incline its just flat .. and he max the machine but it only takes 10 plates each side .. hes like wow Wtf this will be a joke! .. he sits and very confident, he makes a little laugh and pushes .. hes like omfg itss.. itss heavy! and sadly he is stuck with his knees pushing in his face and he forces to not let the machine go or else his knees will crush his face.. he stays in this position for 2 minutes and no one comes help him .. they are looking at him asking theirselves wtf is he doing .. i couldnt talk cause i was too much stuck.. and finally a friend came and took the plates off ! That guy who was doing the legpress.. was me! loll

We have an older guy at our gym that is clearing suffering from a mid life crisis. He will load the bar up with as many plates as it will hold why on the safety pins set at about waist height. after several minutes of grunting and talking to himself he steps up to the bar, with a very loud over exagerted yell/grunt combo he proceeds to crack the bar off the pins abouit 2" then drops it and continues to grunt and talk to himself. He does the same thing on leg press, he leaves it racked and just locks it out then slams it back onto the catch. all while wearing cut-offs, wool socks and a wife beater. what a tool kit.

i was training at a downtown gym in van and its supposedly the most "hardcore" gym in vancouver. anyways, there is this fat blob doing squats, guy obviously was dellusional and not right. His knees all wrapped up, belt on, ready to do a set of squats , and from his 1990's Nike Gym bag he pulls a small boom box and plugs it into the outlet in the corner right by the squat rack, presses play...no music comes out but i hear this "COME ON, LETS GO!" "COME ON, LETS GO" "COME ON, LETS GO"....a man's voice repeating itself over and over... i asked the guy at the desk what the hell it was and he said that the blob tape recorded himself and plays it for motivation. The funny thing is the guy is a masters competitor and did a show in BC so there is a good chance he is on this board reading this......

On a serious note, I once saw a totally fat slob bring a piece of rope to the gym, tie together two 90lb dumbbells and grab onto them held together and row them about 2 inches each with his arm.

He was bent over, leaning on his quads while doing this. I could not figure out what the **** this guy was trying to accomplish but it was by far the stupidest exercise ever done by anyone ever.

He was at least 100lbs overweight and looked like he had an IQ of about 15.

I got a few stories. Way back when we had a Gold's in Montreal (early 90's).

In walks an older chinese dude. Very thin hair combed back with some sort of gel so it looks like strings pulled back around his head. Very thick nerdy glasses with a lens like the bottom of a coke bottle.

So in he walks and straight up to the fixed barbell rack. Grabs a 120lbs and a 115 lbs. Proceeds to swing up the 120 bar over his head while using the other hand to hold the 115. Here he is balancing that bar overhead and everyone around him scatters in all directions. After about a minute, he lowers the 120 in a very akward motion and swings up the 115 in the other hand and does the same. Got used to this after awhile and we would all just stop exercising where he was until he finished. No one wanted a 120lbs bar crashing on their heads if he lost balance of it.

Still same gym in early 90's. Sexy girl walks in, all guys gawking like they were hit with a spell of dumbness at the same time. Girl walks into locker room, 10 minutes later walks out in see through white tights and a black g-string underneath. Insanity erupts, all guys are grouping together staring and everyone in the gym has a boner. Remember this is the early 90's and showing g-strings wasn't the fad yet. Was really amusing to see how a whole gym environment can change to get a glimpse of an ass...lol

Last one was seeing a 700lbs benchpress. Fat guy walks in. Think nothing of it. Starts loading up the bar with those orange plates that were 45kgs if I remember correctly. Gets the bar to 700lbs. So of course, never seeing something like that. I stop whatever I'm doing and watch. Guy proceeds to pound out 4 reps. Though they weren't perfect with the bouncing off the sternum cheat but still he managed without needing his spotters. Though I would cringe when I would see that bar bounce off his chest.

I was in Golds gym in Surrey one day and I was doing barbell curls a row or two back from the mirrors. I was just getting over a cold and on one exhale, I shot a huge loogy just over the head of one of two huge guys working out in front of the mirror. It hit the mirror and they didnt notice. I finished up and left, lol.

1. Schizo in the gym
One time there was this asian guy who was a schizophrenic (pardon my spelling lol if its wrong). He was taking pictures of everybody in the gym including me while squatting. Then he was creepily staring at pictures in change room for 30 mins. Cops came in, escorted him out. One of the personal trainers later told me he was a schizo. I actually saw him a few days later in a restaurant. He was squatting on his heels (not an exercising squat) in the middle of the aisle with his camera.
2.
Guy in the gym wearing compression shorts.
If anyone else does this, sorry but its weird.
This guy who was reasonably built was working out in an old style bodybuilding muscleshirt (he was probably 20 years old). He was wearing full out compression shorts. Everyone was staring.

My buddy doing 120 lb db curls was pretty nuts. I have also seen him bench 225 31 times, or when he squatted 695lbs. That was all done when he was natty too. I have another buddy who is 180lbs and can squat 500. My friends all make me feel like a pussy!

last night, older guy about 40+, bicep "curl"/static hold on the preach bench with 110lb DB.

i kept watching because i wanted to see him hyper extend his elbow

he let the weight move about 1inch ROM, all the while grunting and straining

best part, he rolled the weight on the floor, to and from the rack

dude at my gym. mid 50's. has super old man strength (sorry if i offend any old men on the board). guy works out very casually... never sweats, trains for like 30 min max. not insane lifts but benches 315 for 10-12 like its nothing and he could do 50 reps but its too boring for him.

anyways it always blows my mind to see him pull the 3 plates off a bar or hammer strength machine all in one stack gripped between his massive paws. i dont think anyone else notices but i think its pretty impressive and he does it like its nothing and will carry them casually to the next bar/machine and just slide em back on and do a set.

I totally believe in "old man strength"....my father and father inlaw are the same way and it absolutely amazes me with their raw ass power

.......for instance a piece of Drill Pipe (awkward as all hell) Off say a Jack Knife Double Drilling Rig is 500+ pounds and have seen them both at dif times pic it up like paper weight and toss it back on the Pipe Rack, which is 4 ft tall with planks under them!!

...not even to mention all the other amazing feats of strength they have proven to me over the yrs!!

Many years ago when I was training at a YMCA I watched this guy with MS attempt to do squats. His first set was 135 which he seriously struggled to get out some really crazy looking reps. Next set was 225, I thought shit this poor ****er is going to kill himself....well as fast as he unracked the weight he went down. On the way down 3 of his fingers where caught between the bar and the safety pins in the squat rack, thus severing them off. Shit hes laying on the floor, his 3 fingers are a couple of feet away from him and blood is squirting every where. The staff put his fingers in a bag of ice and he left in an ambulance....never seen him at the gym again.

Okay, this isn't something from the gym, but I have to tell this story or my head is going to explode from confusion.

A friend of ours has recently gotten hooked on whey protein, and he's going through it like crazy. This friend doesn't lift weights, by the way. He does push ups here and there, but doesn't actually use any dumb bells, barbells, etc. He is very skinny, obviously doesn't eat enough. He picked up a 5 lb container a couple weeks ago, and is saying how he needs more already because it's gone. My room mate and I can't believe this. I ask him how much he is taking each day, and he says:

"varies greatly on how much activity
i'd say, 50-200 g
i don't take it on a regular schedule
it's just how much my muscles feel they need it"

200 g?! 8 scoops?! I have no idea what activity he's talking about here. Like I said, he doesn't work out. He is almost 6 feet tall and weighs around 150 lb. So I'm a little concerned he's using the whey protein as a meal replacement instead of a supplement. I explain to him that I lift heavy 4 times a week and only take about 50 g per day, and that the rest of my protein comes from food.

he says:
"yeah, but if i practice singing, i'll take on extra dose just for my chords
which makes vast improvement on that as well"

Not knowing what to say, I tell him I'm going to bed, and he throws this in:
"i've been practicing a lot of strange stretches that sorta hurt bad
that's why i've stepped up the protein
and i am seeing dramatic increases in muscle growth
hurt good, i should say"

So apparently, without lifting weight, he's seeing dramatic muscle growth in the span of a couple weeks just from stretching. Funny how he still looks the same to me since the day I met him.

That's one of my "Most insane things I've seen on MSN" but it made me think of this thread, and I thought some of you might enjoy the story. Maybe I am being a judgemental asshole, but I strongly feel it's totally unnecessary for him to be consuming all that whey, and that he's very confused about its use and effects.

^^^ ya bro people like that i just stay the **** away from... i was talking to this skinny kid who just graduated h.s last year hes 6'2 probably 150... like super skinny... Hes asking me how to get big and i said plain and simple you have to eat wayyy ymore than you do now. Never mind the training he was too thick headed to absorb what i told him because he 'learned stuff from the internet' ... I told him if you want to bulk up, and your metabolism is ask fast as you say it is try 6000cal and work the shit out of compound lifts and then hit all the little stuff. I mean anyone would have to grow or at least PUT ON SOME FAT from that and look bigger ;) Again, he insists that he eats enough and i insist that he most definitely is NOT because hes not ****ing getting any bigger... and then hes like 'man i just cant do it'... after all this bs of me trying to help him and shit he just throws it in the can... that ****ing pissed me off.

I told him all this stuff very politely btw... lol

2 moments for me. One was when one event happened my first year working out. There was this guy into the squat rack doing straight barbell curls with 2 25's on each side on his 4-5 rep all I herd was this big ol Shit blowing noise. guy stops and Racks the bar and just goes into the mens washroom and the next thing I knew was his GF comes down stairs knocks on the mens bathroom door and throws a shopping bag with cloths into there for him, so ya he def shat himself

Another event was when this big (Fat) massive Power lifter Mfer walks into the gym one day Yelling like a fool with the gym packed Getting under the smith to do 4 plates a side for squats I said to my GF he is def gonna hurt himself and just got the words out when all we hear is the BIG crash with him Pinned to the floor ( nev had the spotters up and had no one spotting him) Squeeling like a pig. The next day I was told by the receptionist he had torn both outer quadrants in his legs. Sees the guy 2 mths later and he shows his injury and both legs are Fuked!

Last night a guy ditched some 90lb dumbells doing a press and a fat lesbian came upstairs from the womens only section and bitched out all the guys doing freeweights out for disrupting the atmosphere downstairs!

Haha. I have to admit by force of habit and my mental preparation I'll chalk up for almost everything.

As for insane things, I saw a girl eat shit on a treadmill at the U of C and it spat her out into the mirror. I thought for sure the mirror would have shattered. It was so classic, her strides couldn't keep up with the belt so slowly her feet started getting further back on the treadmill but she was still hanging on at the front, then she let go and WOOOSH lol

Funny:

Saw a lady using the peck deck machine standing and facing the seat. At one point the machine pulled her and she almost smacked her face into the seat.

Impressive:

A little Chinese dude named David at U of C gym benching 345lbs for reps. He couldn't have been more 130lbs.

Sorry but I can't believe it lol. Even if it wasn't full RoM. I've seen the dudes walking around in that gym, I used to work out there. I've only seen a couple that could pull that off, but they were definitely heavier than 130.

There's this guy at the gym, probably late 20s, looks like crap, I don't think he even works out much. I used to see him about 7-8 years ago at IronWorks. He would like 90lb dumbells on flat bench. He would struggle to get even one rep in by himself. Next thing I know, he grabs the 100s. Asks me for a spot, I'm like oh damn. I give him a lift, almost lifting as hard as I can to get it up, and then he does one more, again me having to lift as much as I can. He puts those away and grabs the 110s! I said oh **** no, so I go talk to someone on the other side of the gym for 10 mins so I don't have to help him. I can't remember, but I'm not even sure if his new spotter got the weights up with him.

Fast forward to a few months ago, this guy is at the gym ago, and lucky me, he's doing flat bench right beside me. Again struggling, then goes up in weight. I don't want to go back beside him, so I go talk to someone for like 10 mins, then I come back and he comes out of no where, 'excuse me', 'yes?', ' can you give me a lift?', 'just a lift!?' (my voice goes high pitch I was so excited I didn't have to spot him the whole time.)
So I help him to barely get them up, and get the hell out of there. When I turned around, he was holding the weight at the top, I don't even think he did one rep, just held the weights there, then threw them to the ground. I can't remember if they were 100s or 110s, but I would bet anything, he couldn't even do 5 reps with 80lbs.

My brother...doesn't work out much, more of a soccer player.

Comes with me to a community center gym in Vancouver.

I go Bench, he goes to the treadmill. The treadmill is in a fairly packed room with bikes and other treadmills... maybe 15 in total. A stop by and notice a bunch of good looking to Hot women. ( not all of them of course, but pretty damm good view.)

My brother goes on a treadm. beside this hot women and starts running,
Kicks it up to 9 and shows off...

5 min later.. he come to me .. all read, sweating and is like.. I gotta go.. I am leaving right now.. give me the keys bla bla bla

The women dropped her towel and he wanted to pick it up. He flew straight off the treadmill.. apparently he basically landed in the middle of the room .. Most were laughing. he just grabbed his shit and ran

I laughed soo hard... tool ke like ten minutes to start benching again.. my brother? hurt himself quite badly on his knees, elbows and hands.. and never came with me to that gyn again

Being my brother.. ten times funnier though..

Saw a pretty over weight guy have a heart attack on the treadmill and die. At first he fell and the treadmill shot him back into the aisle, and people we kind of laughing, but now for very long. He went all white clenching his chest and then looked like he passed out. Took the ambulance like 5 minutes to get there, there was nurse there that was trying to revive him, but didn't work. Die right there!

Ah, well sorry if this is an unreasonable assumption but I assume any amount for reps means unassisted full RoM. I'm not trying to cut you or the guy down or anything, but board pressing at 3 boards adds an assload to your bench.

Not insane moreso impressive. Bigger guy, doing free weight work incline chest press. Walks over and picks up the 120s that someone left on the floor. Not before asking the guy nearest to them if he was using them..(Smaller dude, made me laugh but he was just being polite) Presses them a good 10 times with no spotter, perfect form, and doesn't drop the weight! I couldn't believe it. He did the proper dismount where he placed them on his knees as he stood up, and put them back on the rack. I've never seen anyone that big and polite in the years i've trained at my gym.

It was a nice change. Respect.

About 10 yrs ago, some guy my training partner knew, showed up at the gym while he was trying to recover from bronchitis. He just wanted to do a couple of "light" sets of decline presses. He just didn't want to lose too much strength. The guy loaded up 405 lbs cranked out 3 sets of 8 with no warm up, said goodbye and went home.

On the other hand, I've acutally seen a guy trying to do "neck curls" on a flat hamstring curl machine. I'll let you use your imagination on how he was positioned for that one... LOL!

Wednesday, I see the same thing. Friday, I'm finishing up some squats. He asks how many sets I have left. I tell him 1 more, then he can have the rack. I have an uncle that according to my dad was able to lift the back end of a 1/2 ton up when he was younger. He is in his mid 40's now and a bit overweight but apparently was quite the beast when he was young.

Other feats of strength I've heard about him were a raw 500 lb bench press, picking up a deer he just shot and carrying it up a steep hill about 100 yards to the top. Open hand punching an unruly horse in the side of the head and knocking it to it's knees and getting in a scrap at the bar 13 on 1 and winning. Farm boy.

I'm sure there is some exaggeration to theses stories but that is what I have been told. He is a way bigger guy then Franco BTW. 6'2-6'3 heavy frame. Don't underestimate home grown food and raw milk by the gallon as an anabolic agent. I grew up in the country not a farm boy myself though and my younger brother had a friend that could go to the bar at 13 and not get ID'd. Had a full beard and thick as shit. This kid also drank lots of raw milk.

I also know this other guy I used to work with when I was doing Armored car. Heaviest framed guy I have ever seen. He was only 6'0 but had size 17 feet. His wrists and hands were absolutely massive. I don't really know how to describe it, bigger wrists then my ankles probably. Reminded me of a Neanderthal or something. I kept trying to get him to train for strongman or highland games or something but he wasn't really interested. Wasted potential there.

A half ton likely weighs about 3500. The back end of a half ton probably doesn't weigh more than 7-8 and quite possibly a fair bit less and you can bouce it. I can't move the back myself but with the help of another guy we can bounce the back of a pickup into a parking spot. One strong guy could definitely do it.

An F150 weights 4750lbs... seriously, theres no way... MAYBE if the guy had a huge lever arm mounted off the back and some huge straps going up over his shoulders..

edit, like this... I highly doubt an average farm boy is going to just pick up a truck without some significant help... notice that this truck is like the small chev you can get the "canyon".. the 6ft long levers are going to give him a 1/3 mechanical advantage too.

I get so sick of hearing stories about peoples uncles and their dads friends... as soon as you tell anyone you lift, you have to listen to a story about how some guys dads friend could pick up a small car and throw it like a stone.... no one could do anything 20+ years ago that you cant find a video of on youtube... so if there isnt a youtube video of someone doing it, IMO it never happened.

That canyon in the video has a small 5 cyl. engine and a puny drivetrain. A 1/2 ton from 20-30 years ago would likely weigh 1000lbs more.

I've heard the BS stories as well and yeah they are annoying I believe these ones though.

Poundstone lifted that truck 18 times. Do you think he could lift it once without leverage? Not saying my uncle was as strong as Derek Poundstone but I bet he wound have been close. Throwing 100 pound bales 10 feet in the air for an hour can make your back pretty strong and they used to feed him pretty good too. Tons of meat and a shit-load of raw cream on everything. I used to go over to their place a few times a year when I was a kid and they would slather raw cream and butter on everything. Super rich high calorie meals. His whole family is obese, I'm talking 300-400 pound sisters. His dad was probably 500 lbs before he died in his late 70's. They didn't get that way from eating junk either this is all 90% home grown food. Good Ukrainian family.

Basically he ate and trained like a strong man without knowing it. I've grilled my dad on the stories a few times because I didn't believe them either and he swears they are true, no reason for him to lie to me.

Not too many families live the way they used to anymore and the ones that do likely don't give a shit about youtube.

His ROM is about 6" on those lifts, and once he gets the truck bouncing you can see him use it to his advantage.

+ the leverage
+ the nicely located handles
+ using the lightest truck available.

The odds of some guy just grabbing a trailer hitch and being able to lift a truck is just not possible in my books. We're talking a 1500-2000lbs rack pull with your hands on some square/sharp corners with a little sideways walk...

Back on topic...

Yesterday I was showering it up and a little light caught my eye on the ceiling... one of the little rings around the sprinkler head on the fire suppression system had been popped off and was hanging from the sprinkler head and there was a clear view into the bathrooms above the shower... not sure if it was intentional, but if someone was upstairs they'd easily see into atleast 2 showers... out of precaution I shook my weiner at any possible peepers and continued my shower and told the people that worked there... thought it was pretty funny though.

Well, as far as lifting the back end of a pickup truck....I witnessed a fellow do it with my own eyes...He was about 6 foot 3 inches tall, and squatted down, did a type of deadlift off of the back bumper and straightened right out....Big farm boy, strong as old hell....I also watched him grab a 45 gallon drum of oil, lift it, and put it on the back of a flatdeck....Then 1 more, same fella, snap on tool guy came over saying his ratchet was unbreakable....I said give said fellow a try, he put it in a vise, snapped it, then salesman gave him another one, he snapped it....Ok 1 last story....You know gravel dump trucks....Same fellow, changed his tire, lifted the spare up over his head in a military press, dropped it down to forehead and threw it up a few feet and it landed in the back of the box, all stories have several witnesses and i witnessed each one of these events.....
The biggest thing i do not believe is the 13-1 fight, sorry, not even the mighty chuck norris can pull that one off....I think you lost some of the audience on that part.....
All of my stories are true, and the fell was only 26-30 yrs old when i witnessed these events......ranging over 4yrs....

I've heard these farm boy stories, and I want to believe them.. I believe the 45 gallon drum story, they only weight 200lbs.... I'm still having a hard time with the idea that someone could lift a truck off the back bumper though... coming from IW, im more inclined to believe it though... I suppose if the truck was designed with enough of its weight infront of the front axel, it would assist in the lifting of the rear... either way, the guy is going to be deadlifting atleast 1500lbs, he should be doing powerlifting competitions.

45 gallons of oil is about 9.3 lbs per gallon, so that is close to 450 lbs, plus the tin, and a real bitch to grab and lift.......not an easy task......
Hes a big burly construction worker raised on a farm....It was no special truck, just a 1970 is chevy, fixed up nice, it was my friends truck, and he said he bet he could lift it, and he did......turned red, put some rags under the bumper for cushion, and heaved it up off the ground a good 10 inches or more ...Dont forget, the suspension helped and with his height, he was locking out at the top...Thats my reasoning anyway, as i tried it and couldnt come close....lol....so i walked away, sad and embarrassed, as i workout all the time, hes a friggin heavy duty mechanic that could give a shit about it....lol, also this is an empty box, and your box is now a lever as all the weight is at the front, not even close to 1500 lbns...I will hook up an industrial scale to a crane and try a similar truck when i get a chance, but its not anywhere near 1500 lbs, ill guarantee that much.....
empty box, all weight on fron tires, its similar to a mechanical advantage you would get with a wheel barrow.......when you think of it......

I dont want to get all picky about specifics but a gallon of water weights 8.8lbs, oil is between 6-8/gallon dependin on weight of oil. So maybe 300-400lbs of oil, the drum itself maybe 50#... I dont lift these drums but I can tip/roll them pretty easily. The empty drums are quite light.

Im interested to see what the your scale says about the back of a truck... last time I was at the track, I weighed my nissan, the entire car was 2600lbs, the front was 1350lbs and the rear was 1250lbs... its hard to believe a 4000-5000lb truck is going to have a lighter rear end than a 240.

Again, I work in a metal fab shop Im picking up 4X8 sheets of 14ga/10ga/.188" material weighing between 100-250lbs and It hasnt done all that much for my strength over the last 5 years and I eat like a horse and use gear. I grew up in the farms and had lots of farmer friends, none of them had this freakish strength you guys speak of... apart from bales of hay, they didnt do all that much lifting... mind you, these were dairy/potato farmers, maybe grain guys do more heavy lifting.

My dad ( now almost 80) grew up in Germany on a farm..
As back as he can remember, he was working physical labor ..

This guy has nver once lifted weights ( besides construction later in his life and his farm life)

I never say him lift a truck or that shit, but this guy is by far the most conditioned man I have seen working and pretty damm strong.

.. what I am getting at is that I believe that mental toughness and physical strength that has developed from an early age on ( healthy or not) can be significanly stronger then trained and forced build up of strenght...

Let's face it.. most people sitting on their ass till they are 17-18 will never develop the strenght that people had to develop back then to simply survive...our bodies are weak and soft compared to what they had to put up with back then

Fair enough, short cab short bed of that year is only supposed to be 3886 lbs., so its possible the back end would only weigh 1500lbs. I suppose if one could do a 2000lb rack pull they could pick up a precarious 1500lb object. :D

Yeah, that one sounds the most fishy to me as well. I would have to hear the story again to find out what really went down. To clarify, I don't think he actually fought all of them or they all came at him at once. It was more along the lines of him getting in an altercation with some of the guys in this group but by the end of it they left the bar because they didn't want to actually have to scrap with him.

Also this feat of strength wasn't witnessed first hand by my dad like the lifting of the back end of the pickup. Since this one is a story of a story (my dad wasn't at the bar) I'm sure there could be some exaggeration in there.

Guys who grow up doing heavy physical labor when they are boys and eat right I think tend to have a physical advantage that people who start training later in life don't have.

It always amazes me how these people always USED to exist, but in a city of 2 million, I cant find anyone that can do those things your uncle could do... a half ton pickup weighs 4000lbs, the day someone lifts a 2000lb rear end and moves it, is the day I die. Even on those "worlds strongest man" competitions, they're lucky to pick up a shelled out small car chassis. Shit, Franco could barely move the back end of a 2000lb car.

I knew a guy that could do this.He came from Croatia, about 5'8 and very heavy build, built like a tank from top to bottom. His neck didn't appear until he was 65,and he had two brothers massive strong as well. From the country and lived in Cranbrook, which by the way has had a number of super strong men, most eat a lot of wild game.

I love these kinda stories. I don't have any quite as intense but one thing my dad told me sticks in my head. A relative, through marriage I think, was a stone mason his whole life. He had massive strong hands. The story goes that he could get into a plank position and support himself by grasping a beer bottle with one arm straight and fully extended above his head (toes touching the ground). Feel free to try :)

I've seen cement finishers play this game. They start with two hands and stretch out fully extended and see who can reach the furthest.I saw one guy do it with one hand. Those guys have strong mid sections.

There a kind gentleman in my gym that does dumbbell press with a (I kid you not)120 lbs for 4 sets of 8 reps...only thing is he just turned 70. It is indeed quite a sight. This for me is one of the most inspirational BB I've met.

Recently I attended the Montreal Barbell power lifting meet. There's a 64 year old man that dead lift more that 500 lbs. A 19 year old girl that bench, squat, and dead lift more weight than most guys in the gym.

I was working out last night, minding my own business but couldn't help but overhear the two guys talking in front of me. Well the older guy apparently thinks he's some kind of guru talking all kinds of nonsense about proper shoulder training to this younger kid. Anyways i finish my set and i'm resting again when i spot the kid doing DB shoulder press's, He's doing 70's real good and gets to the 4rth rep...here comes the old guy flying over in a hurry to spot the kid. Well instead of gently pushing up on his tricep-elbow area to spot him...he starts slapping the kids triceps. I couldn't believe it at first...fwap, fwap, fwap. slaps him like 5 times till the kid muscles it up almost pulling his shoulder out of the socket. Then 10 minutes later i see him doing this same thing to some other kid who's like 15 and using 20 pounders. WTF!

not really insane but kind of funny. I was working at out the Grant Macewan gym in Edmonton and there was a very nice older looking lady, around 40, just warming up in front of me. I was doing concentration curls (not really sure why) but anyway she decides to do some tricep kickbacks basically right in front of me. She is facing me but her head is down and I, being single at the time, peek over and notice that she is not wearing a bra and her shirt is not really covering anything. I must have done about 100 arm curls with the same weight cause I was sportin wood and couldn't stand up from the bench so I just kept on curling and enjoying the view. She get's done and goes to get a drink and that's when she notices she forgot her bra and she quickly ducked out to go change. Took me a good few minutes before I could stand up.

Herc.

A couple weeks ago at my gym, I noticed this 40 something year old man working out. Must have been a noob cause I never seen him workout at my gym and I been there for almost 10 years. Well, this idiot had the best wardrobe for the gym, his attire included the following: outdoor soccer cleats, red shiny boxing shorts, a fishing vest, sunglasses and a pink bandana! I was like "WTF!" lol

Second story: Last summer I was at my gym doing legs, and since all the machines for legs are placed in the same vicinity, I happen to walk by a old man of about 70yrs repping out on the adductor machine. I happen to notice that this old man was wearing provocative short shorts. I also notice that his balls were hanging out to the side. GROSS! I then turned my head in disgust.!! WTF!

So im looking at this thinking to myself "wait for it, wait for it" and sure enough as soon as this kid got the weight handed to him he fliped right over and crashed into the db rack...lol

haha so true, I have always felt this way, back in the good ole' days it seems like most people were willing to help eachother but now, it seems pretty rare. One person out of thousands helps someone and everyone goes "ohh we have a such a great community here everyone helps eachother" but in reality its like 10% helping, 20% doing nothing and everyone else just dumping over whoever they can. One thing I wouldnt do though is if someone was asking for advice, is throw it back in their face, just me.

Ya man i have to agree. I stay pretty neutral around here, but i will admit i tend to blow up here and there when dumb ****s insist on talking me down all the time so im no angel, but in all honestly CBB is just full of bullies and people who cheer the bullies on every step of the way.

It should read "Canada EGO Building" rather then "Canada Bodybuilding".

Basically everyone that squats at UWO besides #8 and I = fail, there are a couple (2-3?) PL guys that can move decent weight but i can do that too if i do the splits and drop 6" to parallel.

leg press is entertaining to watch. last week at the gym a skinny older guy loaded every plate he could find... probably about 1000lb onto the leg press and then did about 6 or 8 reps about 3cm deep.

the best part is he then took off leaving all 22 plates on the machine!

haha, a week or two ago at the gym I saw a guy doing something similar, he was pretty small and kind of chubby, but walked around with one of those ****ing tight ass long sleeve under armor shirts like he was the man...carried a fanny pack with him also. Anyways he probably sat on the leg press for 40 mins while moving the weight a few cm's for probably 3 reps each time.

Quick observation doing back tonight

1. Guy locking out 185lb deads like bending over backwards

2. Guy loading the leg press 12 plates, shitty ROM

3. Guys not even lifting just standing there talking

Tonight was one of the better nights. If people just googled shit for 5 seconds they could figure these things out... it blows my ****ing mind really. If you don't know, just ask someone, or ****ing google it if you're too puss.

I saw an asian guy do really nice full squats the other day though, 135lb but still really nice.

you 2 are douches. Why do you go talk to them like a ****ing human and say you've been watching and you're concerned that they may injure themselves?

Yes I've gotten blown off by idiots who think their way is better but by and large when I approach guys because I think they could injure themselves from a lift they are doing incorrectly they welcome the feedback.

More ego in a gym than brains , i see kids EVERYDAY im in the gym trying to lift weight they shouldnt even be picking up never mind trying to do reps etc with.....I always try and help them out and explain why , no one ever did this for me ( i had to figure it out the hard way).

You know what guys..yes sometimes it can be a bit humorous watching some of these people in the gym.
Usually you can tell whether they're new (and possibly young) to the iron work but they just want to get it done and become strong and big as fast as they can..those are the people that guys on here should give a helping hand to so they don't get hurt. It's like any sport, vets have to help rookies and if you don't, you're just a dumb meathead that gives lifting a bad name. If you were at work, would you let a new guy sink or get hurt cause you thought it would be funny...grow up like Nate says.

If the person is an obvious experienced lifter and acting stupid...maybe some on here..those people you can giggle at as they're putting on a performance..and giving the sport a bad name...

If you're in either category....dummies!!!

^^I have to spread the green around some more..

I'm kinda guilty myself though, i tried giving a kid some sound advice a while back and all i got for my efforts was i didn't know what i was talking about. It was your typical loading the leg press up and ROM was a couple inch's.

Ever since than I've ignored them.. Maybe Nate has a point, by and large ppl will be receptive. I shouldn't let a bad experience or two have me paint everyone with the same brush..

i've had some good experiences and some bad when trying to help people....I generally find if they are new to the gym, they'll take what help they can get, but if they've been "working out" for any amount of time, they don't like what you have to say.
Granted it's not true for everyone, but more often then not, guys ego's in the gym are far too inflated to try and help

If i'm going to help someones squat form for instance that would mean me watching them and critiquing them, i didn't go to the gym to personal train. Just saying 'squat deeper' is probably not enough so i would rather do nothing at all (other then laugh).

That's actually a good point. Just recently this kid got me to spot him on bench, when he's done i turn and start to walk away but he asks me if there is anything he could do to improve his bench.. Man i thought, where do i start??

What i did was get his e-mail and i told him I'll send a couple good vid's on benching. I told him to watch the vids a couple times just before coming to the gym on bench day... Politest kid i ever met. :)

So guess i did help someone since that other incident.

Those guys that have been there a bit with the egos blocking their vision are beyond help...there going to do their thing. You can usually tell if a person is recptive to a bit of a tip or some help...I'm not saying help everyone that needs help but when you see someone putting themself in a dangerous position with too much weight or form totally off the wall, struggling etc...a little help and some encouragement go a long way. It can be lots to do with the approach to the situation too...be approachable...and usually...people will be receptive to you assisting them a bit if you don't go around acting like a knob.

I have to say that I've never really got the brush off from someone I tried to help...male or female. You can give help in a way that is not threatening..talk to them.

When I first started going to the gym many years ago in Campbell River, B.C., there were a few pretty good guys, some competitive BBers and some regular gym guys who helped me lots and they did it in a fun non intrusive way...I learned lots from them and after that I wasn't reluctant about asking them at the appropriate time when I was unsure...I never want to see someone get hurt in the gym, especially if I could have helped prevent it...you guys who'd rather laugh, look in the mirror..how did you learn all this knowledge and expertise that you have today. Be a bigger guy (or girl) than that and if you look like you might know what you're doing, act like it.

The board is starting to get a little over run with members who want to tear guys down or ridicule them..we're supposed to be all in this to better ourselves and share knowledge and experience..

Seriously though that guy needs a boot in the nut sack. If new, well a little research could go a long way, if he's been training a while, well its the boot in the nutsack for him.

Another great post razorsedge! The only thing i wouldn't do in a gym is become "approachable", Gawd can you imagine how disruptive that could become? I don't even like to talk to people unless its as soon as i walk in or am done my workout, one of the reasons why i listen to an ipod and even that isn't always fool proof.

Saw a 20 yr old kid must have been 6'10 155lbs, light up a smoke right next to me on the recumbent bike, take a couple puffs , butt it out in his piece of gum and hop on the bike like a mad man.

When I asked "Why the hell are you smoking?"

He said "The guys in the tour de france in the 30's did it for better respiration".

I'm the last member working out at a local gym. Owner is talking to a woman member. It's about closing time. I'm in the locker room and go take a dump. It was a long one. About 20 minutes. So I come out and notice no one is around and the front door is locked. I can't get out. So I start looking for the owner. I go into the girls locker room and I see him there boinking the woman member. I back out and go sit in the front and read a mag. When he comes out I politely ask if he can open the door for me and smirk. No other words were exchanged. I got free protein shakes for a month after that. I think she was married.

(meant to quote above about smoking)

True indeed, however they were also on large amounts of morphine, amphetamines and cocaine etc. On the velodrome there is an event called the 'six day' and back in the day it was literally a 24/7 even for 6 days, the buildings were smoke filled and the riders on serious amounts of drugs. lol. Today the event is more regular, lol.
