Don't know if this has been posted before...

At first I thought this was funny.... Then I realized the awful truth of it. Be sure to read all the way to the end!

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he's fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.

Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts
Anyway!

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears..

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.

Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.

Put these words
Upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me
To my doom...'

When he's gone,
Do not relax,
It’s time to apply
The inheritance tax.

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, & our nation was one of the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt, had a large middle class, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.
What in the hell happened? Can you spell 'politicians?' And I still have to 'press 1' for English!?!?!?!?
I hope this goes around CANADA at least 100 times!!!!! YOU can help it get there!!!!

GO AHEAD - - - be a CANADIAN !!!!!!!!!!

Well, 100 years ago, when we also had a lower standard of living and a lower life expectancy. Sure, in 2008 on the top 100 largest country debts Canada was ranked 12th, but guess who was ranked 100. Libya. "Yay, we don't have very much national debt but we have a poor human rights record and lower quality of life."

I'm proud to be Canadian man, but I gotta support a woman's choice to go out and work if she can bring home more bacon than I can lol. And hey, at least they are listing English first in the menu ;) I know there is a lot of b.s. in the government but I still think we got it pretty good. (PS: I'm not trying to stir up a shit storm here so I'm trying to keep a neutral/humorous tone haha)

Your statement is contradictory. You are implying that a national debt is somehow necessary for a higher a standard of living.

Canada has a higher standard of living now as a result of capital accumulation and formation which leads to increased productivity. Despite persistent inflation of the monetary supply goods like TV's, radios, cars, phones, all costs less in real terms now than they did even 25 years ago because of technological improvements.

You are correct about women having the choice to work, but many couples have no debate as to whether or not one member will stay at home because the financial math dictates two incomes are necessary to survive.

That's almost exactly what I'm implying, maybe not a higher one, but one we are used to. During this recession we would not be able support our standard of living without running a deficit. Although the term standard of living is quite subjective, I think without taking on debt many of the systems we have in place to "protect" us would have failed.

True, but "wants" aren't what I was referring to. I was referring to health care, military, education, public services, etc which are increasing in cost. Our government has also created a wide variety of social programs and someone has to pay for them. One could argue we could have a lot less tax and debt if we dropped a lot of these programs but that's a different story.

Well said. I didn't see it that way. It's true, there are a lot of taxes out there that could probably be cut, and yes it would be nice if life was the way it was before WITH our current technology advances and higher quality of life, but I don't think that's a realistic goal. Not in the short term anyways.

Public debt decreases standard of living through two principle ways:

1) Public debt diverts capital from the private sector in which this money would be invested into new factories, technologies, or enterprises that would produce new goods and services at cheaper prices than before. When the government borrows money it crowds out private investment because unlike private firms if governments make poor investment decisions they can always tax/steal money from citizens, whereas if a private firm goes bankrupt (GM excluded), private citizens do not have to pay for its failure. Private firms then have to sell debt with a higher yield compared to government debt because their business has a higher risk of default (Suncor can't print of CDN dollars)

2: Inflation. The entire welfare/warfare state only exists as a result of the massive increase of the monetary supply. Inflation leads to higher consumer prices that hurt the poor and elderly, but also require two working incomes because the price of food, gas, and housing continue to rise. The inflation also leads to huge malinvestments such as the dotcom bubble and the housing crash.

As for health care increasing in cost this is a result of mostly government interference in the market place, and a retired population. Look at the forms of healthcare NOT provided by the US government or CDN governments, breast surgery, Lasik eye, etc, and their prices continue to decrease despite perpetual inflation as a result of more private sector investment in new technologies.

Hamilton's idea that the national debt is a blessing is completely false.

Okay okay! Let me finish taking a few more economics courses at the U and I'll get back to you lol. But I still argue that the debt we are experiencing now is not of poor government decisions but our government holding together systems designed to keep small-businesses and low-income families above water. As well, the health care services getting cheaper as an effect of businesses investing in technology is still somewhat of an illusion since they are subsidized by the government.

Thanks for being thorough Bowlcut. How did you become so knowledgeable in the subject? Just something you keep up with or do you have formal education in the topic?

Don't bother with university lol. Most of the economics they teach is Keynesian bullshit.

My area of education is finance (derivatives and fixed income) and free market economics.

You should consider the fact much of this deficit was a bailout for GM and money spent on construction, but what will ultimately hurt poor people is the coming inflation that will see their grocery bills double while their wages remain stagnant.

Haha, I'll keep that in mind when I choose my courses.

Derivatives eh, I'm going into my 4th year of an applied mathematics major with a concentration in mathematical finance and risk management(This summer I did research in options pricing in the math department) and although I've only taken the intro and intermediate micro and macro economics courses I might consider doing a minor. I thought it would round out my education and make it easier to find a job when I graduate, although I will probably end up doing a M.Sc in math if I can't find a job right away.

Ah I don't want to see my grocery bill go up especially since I've put on 20lbs since June and I'm gonna be over 200 in another 2-3 months. AlladdinSane told me if I wanted to get big I had stop eating like an 8 year old girl lol and he was right!

The part that scares me the most is that people think we need to have a successful US to be in the red here. We should be shopping our goods elsewhere, we let the forest industry die (take note there were over 100000 jobs lost with no bail out) and we can get the Chinese and Indians to buy our wood products, there will be a good market to sustain us and build upon. We depend too much on the US as a trading partner, and the finished product market to generate income. We have huge raw natural resource reserves we haven't even looked at working with. Its sad really.

I have read some of Ayn Rand, but I guess her and I don't see eye to eye on certain issues. She and her followers are often regarded as libertarian centralists, and myself I read a lot of Murray Rothbard (I enjoyed his work on the Fed and Great Depression).

Honesty the best book to get into economics I recommend is Henry Hazlits Economics in One Lesson.

What do you read a lot of?
Personally Russian authors tend to be the most interesting because their culture and society is so ****ed up.

I've read just about everything Rand ever wrote, i worship the ground she walked on, lol. Which would discust her i'm sure. I'm not so much interested in economics itself, more along the lines of philosphy. Its like the American Constitution, capitalism, totalitarian never really had any meaning to me untill i read her books, and it just kind of came together for me from than on.

I've just noticed a smattering of her ideologies and values in some of your posts, thats why i was wandering if you had read some of her work.
