hey,
so i watched "I Am Legend" last night, good movie. but i noticed that will smith has a killer chest, and chest that i want. i found what he had done to get that, but just wondering if this is a good way to do it.

Will Smith's chest work out:

To boost the amount you can bench-press, follow Smith's pyramid routine. He did either flat or incline bench presses once a week. Warm up with three sets of 10 repetitions, increasing the weight with each set, but staying below 70 percent of your one-rep max. (Smith did 135, 185, and 225.) Then do up to six sets of one repetition, starting with a weight that's at least 80 percent of your one-rep max. Progress by small--5 percent or less--increments. (Smith did 315, 335, 355, 365, 375, and 385.) Then reverse this path until you're back to the weight you used for your first one-rep set. To thoroughly exhaust the pectorals, Smith would finish by bench-pressing 315 pounds for two sets of five reps, then finally lifting 135 until failure.

Yeah hollywood trainers tend to massively inflate numbers to make them more impressive. On the other hand, if you had all the free time in the world, access to trainers and gear like they do and oh yeah- a $20 million doller contract to look a certain way, then you could probably massively transform your physique and strength in a handfull of months as well.

hes in good shape no question ,but his physique doesnt match those numbers.especially when i compare him to guys that do that kind of weight. i think those nubers are def inflated

will smith looked to be in pretty good shape for that flick (well really only in one scene). I bet hes stronger than you think (quite tall, decent sized athletic man), but would highly doubt he pressing those poundages unless hes using a machine or doing some bogus half-rep form.

Also, i wouldnt use that training method to build a large well developed chest myself.

On a side note, ryan reynolds (who i am semi-aquainted with) looked great on the cover of mens health and in a couple scenes in blade/amytiville horror. I was training at the same gym as him during this time and know his trainer... he did make some good progress but truthfully looked nowhere near the way he did on screen/paper. His trainer (who is a HUGE beast) was telling me that the camera will add 25lbs and subtract 10%bf with all the lighting, angles, makeup and editing that they do. keep this in mind, what you see isnt always what you get.

Will Smith was way bigger in Ali, he looked athletic in this show nothing impressive by any means.

He was also huge in Independence day. Considering how skinny he was during the fresh prince days, surely he's had some "help" along the way.

Smith's trainer claimed that Smith pushed the same numbers for " I, Robot " I have serious doubts about these numbers . When Arnie trained for Twins his bench was reportedly around 400 lbs - something that we'd all agree on since he was able to press 405x8 in his heyday . He had his shirt off a few times in that movie and he was waaaaaay bigger than the Prince of Bel Air has ever been but these claims suggest the difference in BP a mere 20 lbs or so . Arnold has since said this was the last movie he used steroids prior to as he quit in 1988 (or so he claims) . My guess is that Mr Smith used the Smith and his trainer was doing Smith machine rack pulls simultaneously . Most actors have their people inflate everything about them . I remember reading an old Muscle Fitness (wtf?) in which Stallone claimed that his Rocky 1V co-star Dolph Lundgren was 6ft6 and 240 lbs so his own height and weight was obscured . In actual fact Lundgrem is 6ft1 and was about 210 for that role , making Sly about 5ft7 or 5ft8 TOPS . Stallone was probably about 170 lbs for that movie but obviously in shredded form . BTW - Stallone , to his credit , wanted to make the fight scenes so realistic that he actually had Lundgren punch him full force . Lundgren broke 3 of Sly's ribs during one session , lol .
As for Smith's trainer saying he could have been a pro fighter ?Former Canadian heavyweight champ George Chuvalo saw him spar live and said he was less than impressed . I believe he said Smith looked like he spent 6 weeks in a gym beforehand and up close looked much smaller than the great Ali , whom Chuvalo fought for 15 rounds .

It's weird but some people just have good strenght and may not look like they would. I've seen people 30lbs lighter than me bench at least 50 lbs more.......my bench is terrible though lol.

That routine, of the single rep sets, sounds similar to what Weider used to call the "rest-pause" technique. Take a weight that you can't do a full set of reps, closer to the one rep max. Have an assistant, perform one rep, rack the weight, pause a moment, do another rep, and repeat until you have done a set.

For me at least, I made zero progress with this technique.

That's pretty cool to hear; I didn't know the camera had that big a change.

I like Reynolds though, I've been a fan since 2 guys, a girl, and a pizza place.

Will Smith looked better in Ali, but he was the only thing that saved that movie. Although I can't help think of how awesome it would have been with Arnold as the lead; especially since he was originally on-board for the project back in the 90's and the character is supposed to be a 6'4" white german.

Will smith was geared up, no question. Forget the pyramid training and all the other crap that they feed you, he was blasting the juice.

He is still skinny. He gained like 25lbs since fresh prince and cleaned up his diet with help from top of the line professionals. Their are guys at my university who play basketball and eat/train like children, that have EXACTLY the same build as Will smith.

Will Smith had some "help" along the way? LOL #2.

Maybe, but not guaranteed. Will didn't get that big over night. He started getting larger in the later seasons for Fresh Prince, then Independance day, Bad Boys 2, then I robot and Ali you could really see he bulked up. And recently he cut down for I am Legend. It took him a lot of time to get that build. If someone is juicing then could look like that after 2 years, especially if you are genetically gifted which Will is.

Good post. I don't think Will smith ever "blasted the juice". haha.

Also, did I read that right? Did you say you can look like that if on the juice for 2 years!? You can look like that by training properly and eating right for 3 months with the right genetics. They chose Will smith for these movies for a reason. One of them being that he has the body to fit the part.
